Security-Related Part-Time Course Graduation Ceremony

Press Release Date: 22 Aug 07

High Security’ Graduation @ TP

A total of 179 graduands from five security-related part-time courses will receive their diplomas and advanced diplomas from Mr Goh Liang Kwang, Acting Commissioner of Police, Singapore Police Force, at their graduation ceremony on Friday, 24 Aug 2007, at 2pm at Auditorium 2 of Temasek Polytechnic.

The graduating cohorts are from the Diploma in Management and Police Studies, Diploma in Police Studies and Security Management, Diploma in Security and Fire Safety Management, Advanced Diploma in Police Studies and Advanced Diploma in Correctional Studies.

Two of the courses are specially customised certificated courses. The Diploma in Management and Police Studies is customised for staff of the Singapore Police Force, while the Advanced Diploma in Correctional Studies is specially targeted at staff of the Singapore Prison Service.

Among the graduands are 19 students from the pioneer class of Advanced Diploma in Correctional Studies students. Senior Visit Officer from the Singapore Prison Service, Ms Debbie Wang Yu Han, has made history by emerging the first top student for the course. The young mother of an 8-month old boy remembers running out of class many times to throw up as a result of a very prolonged case of morning sickness!

Debbie, who holds a Business Studies diploma, was drawn to service in the prison sector as she wanted to make a difference in the lives of inmates. Her desire to excel at work caused her to take on the part-time correctional studies course, which exposed her to topics like Criminology and Human Dynamics & Criminal Justice which helped her better understand the prisoners. Debbie’s commitment to work and study has had a positive impact on some inmates who are themselves considering continuing their studies when they are released.

By successfully juggling work, studies and pregnancy, Debbie has actualised her life motto - “Never give up”. A firm believer in the need to continually upgrade one’s skills and knowledge, Debbie hopes to eventually do a degree related to Correctional Studies. Even husband, Amirudin, who also works for the Singapore Prison Service is currently pursuing a Masters course in Information Security & Intelligence. He will be cheering her on when she receives her award on Friday.
