With effect from 1 Oct 2007, Temasek Polytechnic will establish a sixth school - the Temasek Humanities & Social Sciences School (HSS).
This school has, as its roots, the Interdisciplinary & General Studies Department (IGS), which was started in 2001 with the mandate to offer Cross Disciplinary Subjects (CDS) in areas not available in the five academic schools in TP as part of the Flexible Academic System for Temasek (FAST).
As IGS has now established itself as the key provider of CDS within the polytechnic, it is timely that IGS should expand its portfolio from offering CDS to offering diploma courses and evolve into a full-fledged academic school in the humanities and social sciences.
The establishment of HSS positions TP as a comprehensive polytechnic offering a wide range of diploma courses, not just in the traditional fields such as business and engineering, but also in humanities and social sciences.
The domain of the humanities and social sciences in TP will open up new pathways for O-level students. It will also create connections within TP as HSS synergises with the five other schools to bring learning beyond technology and the hard sciences.
