In 2006, while addressing 7,000 teachers at a Teachers’ Day Rally, PM Lee Hsien Loong singled out Brendan Lee’s achievements and said the young man had encouraged him greatly. Diagnosed with dyslexia in Primary 1 when he had problems communicating, reading and writing, Brendan never allowed adversity to get the better of him. Through sheer resilience he has excelled both in and out of the classroom and warmed many hearts in the process.
Brendan Lee will be cheered on by his Primary 1 teacher who identified his learning disability when he is presented to the media alongside four other top students in a special event, witnessed by their family, secondary school principals & teachers and TP lecturers on Wednesday, 12 May 2010, at 10.30am, at the Lifestyle Floor (3rd level) of TP’s library. The awards they are receiving are the most prestigious poly-wide awards: the Lee Kuan Yew Award, the Tay Eng Soon Gold Medal Award and the CapitaLand All-Round Excellence Award.
The three Lee Kuan Yew Award recipients, Ong Yong Ming, Brandon Lum and Sharon Tang Xue Er, represent the changing profile of today’s polytechnic student. All three had excellent O-level results and chose to take the polytechnic path. They participated and excelled in local and international competitions. They were engaged in research and innovation. They did extremely well during their internships both local and overseas. They were active in their CCAs and they were all very involved in community work.
It took his father’s death to open the eyes of CapitaLand All-Round Excellence Award recipient Perry Goh that the onus is on him to make the most of his life. Armed with a fresh perspective and motivation, he gave his all to his studies at the ITE and later at TP and to bowling – a sport he had excelled in since primary school.
All five top award winners and their inspiring success stories will be presented to the media.
