Temasek Polytechnic has been crowned ‘Institution of the Year’ at the Crowbar Awards 2017. Together with the Best of Design, Best of Film & Photography and Best of Show awards, TP racked up a total of 8 Golds, 12 Silvers, 10 Bronze medals and 33 finalists.

Regarded as one of the most prestigious competitions for young creatives across Asia-Pacific, the Crowbar Awards throws its spotlight on Evan Tan, a TP Product & Industrial Design alumnus.

As a kid he was extremely fascinated with bicycles. Even until today, Evan has not let that dream disappear. Crowned the Best of Show and Best of Design Discipline at the distinguished Crowbar Awards for his project ‘Kinetics & Gear,’ Evan shares on how his childhood dreams turned into reality.

“I knew that most children would learn how to ride and bike and it would be both fun and exciting for a child to experience this for the first time,” Evan said. “It would be a greater opportunity to design one for them.”

And then came the birth of ‘Kinetics & Gear,’ a bicycle for children aged three to six. The bicycle has two modes--a balance mode for children aged four to five, and a pedal mode for aged five to six. It is designed to develop a child’s psychomotor and cognitive skills, through the functions of the gear box system. Children can learn different series on motion such as the Automata, Kinetics Puzzle, Pulley System, Gears Ratio and Colour Wheels. These play functions allow children to be imaginative and explorative with their creations.

With a product so versatile and functional, it’s safe to say that the engineering was no easy feat. Multiple trials and errors with interchangeable calculations finally led to a good, working bike. Together with the guidance of his lecturers, Evan remained patient, determined and resilient when working to find the right formula for his project.

“Despite being a stand-alone project, the tremendous support I received from my lecturers and coursemates really motivated me,” Evan said. “The TP School of Design has really given me a ton of opportunities to grow and nurture my ability as a student designer.”

The Crowbar Awards is a leading award show for budding creatives to showcase their best ideas.
