Specialist Diploma in Internet of Things


This course provides participants with the core knowledge and skills required to engage in the creative development of innovative IoT solutions, with access to state-of-the-art technologies. Such skills would enable learners to develop disruptive solutions or improve productivity for their organisations.

Upon completing the course, graduates should be able to:

  • Understand architecture and system design of IoT;
  • Design and develop smart IoT applications;
  • Manage smart IoT projects.


Target Participants
The intended target is working professionals who possess at least a Polytechnic diploma or equivalent in a technology or IT-related course.

Course Frequency:

Once a week, 7pm to 10pm on weekdays. The course includes online lessons with collaborative engagement among lecturers and students.

What You Will Learn

Post-Diploma Certificate in IoT Technology

CIO1C01

This subject covers the IoT architecture and gives an overview of the core technologies required for supporting the IoT. It also covers typical application scenarios in which IoT provides innovative new services to increase productivity and save costs. Students will develop an understanding of the conceptual framework and technologies underpinning the IoT and how these interconnected devices have data regularly collected, analysed and used to help streamline business processes.

CIO1C02

This subject equips students with the knowledge and skills to apply design techniques when designing an Internet of Things system. Topics covered include design principles for connected devices, prototyping of embedded devices and prototyping of online components. It also allow students to have an overall view of the underlying principles in building interactive systems, using a combination of hardware, embedded software, web services and cloud computing platform that can sense and respond intelligently to inputs from smart devices in the real world.

Post-Diploma Certificate in IoT Smart Solutions

This subject equips students with the knowledge and skills to apply techniques and tools to develop an IoT application. Students will learn to use a basic selected environment such as Raspberry PI for creating an embedded smart application. Students will also use cloud services to provide the tools and services to integrate the application with the connected objects or devices to create a smart solution. 

CIO1C04

This subject aims to provide students with an opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired in the course to a project. Students would be required to work in teams, to present and demonstrate their smart IoT solutions and products.

Modes of Assessment

100% coursework - Hardware purchase is required to complete some e-Learning assignments and/or project deliverables for submission and grading.

Minimum Entry Requirements

 At least a Polytechnic diploma or equivalent in a technology or IT-related course

 Relevant working experience could also be considered on a case-by-case basis

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
