TP received the prestigious Electrolux Culinary Institution of the Year Award at the World Gourmet Summit Awards of Excellence 2010. The award recognises culinary institutions that offer courses for nurturing culinary talents, and have been consistent in delivering and promoting high standards in the culinary field. Other finalists for this regional award were At-Sunrice GlobalChef Academy, Taylor’s College (Malaysia), and Berjaya University College of Hospitality (Malaysia).

TP’s 20th Anniversary celebrations kicked off on 7 May with a Carnival featuring student performances and a talent competition. A mural which many staff and students had a hand in creating was also unveiled, commemorating TP’s 20 years of Bringing Education to Life, and Life to Education. Schools and departments also actively participated in raising funds for the Campus Care Network to help needy students. The celebrations climaxed in November with the staff Dinner & Dance, and a musical produced, directed, scripted and performed by TP staff and students called ‘Take Heart’.

The SAF Day Combined Rededication Ceremony was held in TP – the first time MINDEF had chosen to hold a ceremony outside of the Central Business District. A total of 47 organisations in the East Zone participated in the ceremony, where NSmen among their staff publicly reaffirmed their commitment to and support for Singapore’s national defence effort.

TP was conferred the title of Honorary Member of MiDAs League and re-inducted into the esteemed Minister for Defence Awards (MiDAs) League for another five-year tenure, in recognition of TP’s commitment to providing strong support to its staff who serve as NSmen.

It was a momentous and proud occasion when the YOG Torch came to TP on the third day of the Torch Relay, ferried by dragonboat across Bedok Reservoir. TP was also closely involved with the inaugural Singapore Youth Olympic Games (YOG), with over 200 TP students volunteering behind the scenes to help in areas such as helping with the equestrian competitions and studying the impact of sponsorship for the YOG.

TP was ranked the highest among the universities, polytechnics and ITE in the Education sector of the national Customer Satisfaction Index Singapore 2010. This year, TP achieved 71.8 points, an increase of 2.9 points from the previous year, and which is a record score for the polytechnic sector.

TP launched the Singapore Compact Student Chapter for Corporate Social Responsibility, with the aim of nurturing students with a sense of social responsibility and ethics to become responsible global citizens. TP is the first polytechnic in Singapore to host a student chapter of Singapore Compact through its Global Connect Club, a student interest group.

Non-profit philanthropic organisation Temasek Foundation awarded TP a $222,800 grant to fund capability building programmes in nutrition intervention for 150 trainees in Cambodia. The collaboration with Cambodia’s Ministry of Women’s Affairs over a four-year period will benefit more than 1,500 community health educators, counselors and leaders from the Women Development Centres of the various provinces in Cambodia. This year marks the sixth year that TP staff and students have been going to the country to help village women learn better nutrition as part of the “Nutrition Intervention Programme”.

The TP Soccer team did the polytechnic proud when they achieved a historic feat, clinching the President’s Challenge Trophy for the first time. The team played a good game against a formidable combined ITE team at the final match of the S R Nathan Challenge Trophy Soccer Tournament 2010/2011 and emerged victorious.
