Lecturer’s Intel stint reaps more than experience

Chern Nam (second from R), with his colleagues at Intel.

AN 11-month attachment at Intel Mobile Research Lab in Hillsboro, Oregon, US, not only benefited Yap Chern Nam, lecturer in TP’s Mobile & Wireless Computing course, but also his students.
From June 2004, Chern Nam worked on wireless technology projects at Intel, dealing particularly with digital voice technology. Returning recently, he continues to work with the world’s leading microprocessor company, on several projects aimed at providing improved wireless technology access and security features to TP. Some of the collaborative projects will enable TP students to gain experience and try the latest in wireless technology.
Commenting on the experience, Chern Nam said that while the exposure of working in an organisation like Intel has benefited him professionally, the real benefits will be in the classroom where he will be able to share first-hand experience on R & D with his students.
