TP Engineering lecturer, Yue Keng Mun, in collaboration with the Sengkang Neighbourhood Police Centre, has designed a unique “Anti-theft Bicycle Stand” that eliminates the need for cyclists to bring along their own locks.
Costing about $100 each, these bicycle stands come with a steel cable that is bolted onto the ground. Cyclists only need to loop one end of the cable through the rear wheel and main frame of the bicycle, and secure it with the built-in padlock.
The stand was officially launched by Mr Wee Siew Kim, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio GRC, on 17 July. Under a pilot scheme, 180 sets of these bicycle stands have been installed at 30 blocks of HDB flats in Sengkang, Punggol and Buangkok.
Singapore Police Force’s Deputy Superintendent Marc E said: “This redesigned bicycle stand will help cyclists secure more parts of their bicycles, so that they are less vulnerable to theft.”
