TP attempts new world record

True grit — Dr William Tan (on hand-bicycle), with TP students and staff kept the pace going through the night during the record-setting attempts.

SOME 6,000 staff, students, alumni and friends of TP heralded the New Year by putting themselves through the challenge of setting a new national and Guinness world record for the longest distance run by a relay team in 24 hours. At the end of the run, held from January 5 to 6, TP achieved a new national record for the greatest cumulative distance run of 14,023km, smashing the previous record by over five times! A confirmation with Guinness on a new world record is currently pending.

The record was set alongside Dr William Tan, a paralympic wheelchair athlete, as he attempted to set another Guinness world record for hand-cycling around a track in 24 hours. He chalked up a total of 264km. Earlier, he had delivered a series of inspiring talks to TP staff and students, urging them to challenge their limits. As the two simultaneous records were being attempted, students rallied Dr Tan and the runners on by putting up a series of activities and performances to keep the mood going throughout the entire event.

TP’s Deputy Principal, Mr Edmond Khoo, commented: “This remarkable achievement bears testimony to our TP spirit. It speaks volumes of how we can move, as a family, to pull our resources and varied expertise together to accomplish an impressive feat.”
