2 golds at Expogast 2006

SINGAPORE’s National Culinary Team emerged second runner-up in the prestigious Expogast 2006 Culinary World Cup held in Luxembourg in November 2006. The team bagged two gold medals in the hot cooking and cold display categories. Two TP staff from the Tourism Academy @ Sentosa were involved in the competition. Jasmine Ng, section head of culinary and service training, was team advisor, and Jason Low, culinary instructor, was a member of the team.

The team, together with Jason (far left) and Jasmine (second from left) were received at the airport upon their return by Mr Teo Chee Hian (far right), Minister for Defence and president of the Singapore National Olympic Council.

Preparing for such a high level competition was not easy. Jason recalled: “It took us six months to prepare for the two categories and to whip up a three-course set menu. During this time, we had to totally commit to our training.”

He is grateful for the support he received from TP: “TP management gave me a lot of support like providing a training budget to purchase necessary items for the competition, and the use of the training kitchen for the team to practice in.”

The Culinary World Cup is one of the five major international culinary competitions sanctioned by the World Association of Chefs Societies. This year, more than 35 countries were represented at the competition.
