Hands-up for the Temasek Design Workshops series

Students from 12 secondary schools gained valuable insight into the study of design through the workshops.

FOR three weeks from October to November 2006, ten alumni from Temasek Design School took design to the doorsteps of secondary schools. They gave 469 students a chance to experience design - from animation to fashion – and provided answers to their questions on design education, in a series of fun hands-on workshops.

While the emphasis was on design fun and focused on the practical and hands-on nature of the discipline, the workshops gave the students an insight into the different design disciplines as well as what learning at the Design School might be like. At question time, many asked the trainers about the academic progression route and were curious about the job prospects and remuneration of designers in Singapore.

For trainer Ben Lai, Product & Industrial Design graduate of 2003, the experience was an eye opener, “I can see how teaching can be a rewarding experience especially for those coming from industry”.
