Danielle scores double first as Straits Times intern

Danielle with her award-winning article on youth subcultures in Singapore.

AS an intern with the Singapore Press Holdings, Danielle Hong, a final-year Communications & Media Management student, scored a double first for a poly student. She not only had her article published on the front-page with photo-credit in The Straits Times, she also clinched the coveted Feature of the Month award for another article.

Her front-page story in the “Upfront” column was inspired by a conversation with friends about the reasons behind teen marriages. Further research revealed that almost 400 people in Singapore belonged to this young and married category, leading Danielle to write the article. “Urban Tribes”, her Saturday spread on youth sub-cultures, clinched for Danielle SPH’s Feature of the Month award.

On what she has learnt, Danielle said: “I’ve learnt how to respect everyone I meet. We take for granted people who are ‘invisible’ to us such as shopkeepers and taxi drivers. You don’t realise that everyone has a story to tell.”
