A TEAM of 23 Engineering students from TP embarked on
a Youth Expedition Project to carry out community work
at Hope Village, an orphanage in Prey Veng, Cambodia,
from 28 February to 15 March.
Working with Operation Hope Foundation (OHF), the team
donated and installed solar-powered cookers and LED lighting
at the orphanage. Additional solar-powered cookers were
also donated to the OHF for distribution to other villages.
These devices were designed and fabricated by the students.
Mr Timothy Chan, the Operations Manager of Hope Village,
estimated that the new devices would save the orphanage
about US$35 a month (S$58).This is equivalent to about
half the monthly salary of a staff they employ. Mr Cheah
Swee Hock, the teams Technical Advisor, explained:
The solar cookers allow the orphanage to reduce
its reliance on conventional firewood and expensive electricity,
which in turn benefits the environment and greatly reduces
operational costs.
