Mr Wallace Lim (L) with Dr Borgna at the Institiute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences.

“I WAS sitting on the shoulders of giants”, was how Mr Wallace Lim, TP lecturer from the Diploma of Chemical Engineering, described his four-month stint at the Institute of Chemical and Engineering Sciences (ICES) on Jurong Island. On industrial attachment, he was there to learn and work with Dr Armando Borgna, a leading research scientist and team leader for the Methane and Hydrogen group, as well as scientists from India, China, America and Europe.
Attached to the Applied Catalysis Department in ICES from May to September, Mr Lim was there to learn the various synthesis and characterisation techniques that are used in nanotechnology. He also took the opportunity to build links for future collaborative projects with ICES as Temasek Applied Science School looks into setting up a nanotechnology laboratory. As part of his stint, Mr Lim had to design a new nanocatalyst which would help ease fuel problems – a project that will be carried out through the collaboration between TP and ICES.
