A SHOPPING cart developed by three students from the
Diploma in Intelligent Building Technology has given new hope to the wheelchair-bound.
The cart comprises an adjustable PVC frame on which a shopping basket is mounted. The frame is then attached to the front of a standard wheelchair, so that a handicapped person can do his shopping independently. For convenience, the lightweight frame can be detached and folded when not in use.
The shopping cart was exhibited at the Assistive Technology (AT) Research Forum organised by the Society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) on 26 September, as well as the SIA-HWA Seminar for Community-Friendly Buildings organised by the Singapore Institute of Architects on 11 November. Mr Zen Koh, Head of Community Research Network at the SPD’s Assistive Technology Centre, said: “This project was featured at the AT Research Forum as it met the forum’s objective of promoting R&D, education and technology that will improve the potential of disabled persons, while showcasing Singapore as a hub for rehabilitative engineering and assistive technology.”
