Army food and army cooks were once the bane of army life and the butt of recruits’ cruel jokes. However today’s soldiers in the SAF can expect their taste buds to be excited by the flavourful, nutritious and superior quality of food.
Thanks to an upgrading and training programme initiated by Mindef, an initial batch of 45 F&B managers has been trained in the Food and Beverage Management Course in Nutrition, and Food Safety by staff from TP’s Food Science & Nutrition (FSN) Department.
The participants who were taught food safety, basic nutrition, healthy cooking and food service, were especially keen to learn about the nutritional value of the foods they ate, menu planning and customer service. Armed with their new knowledge, they returned to supervising the contractors involved in preparing the food for National Service men at the various camps.
Mrs Kalpana Bhaskaran, FSN lecturer, quipped that our soldiers can look forward to army food that is now even more “shiok!”. |
