IT brings art to life

The students’ interactive animation showcase brought the night of beautiful music to life.

A UNIQUE collaboration has provided an excellent opportunity for TP’s Interactive Media Informatics students to apply IT to the performance arts.

Thirty-eight students spent two months working to develop the interactive animations that would accompany a live musical performance by the Singapore Wind Symphony (SWS) Youth Winds. They experimented with different genres of animation from penciliation, stop motion and even manga anime to engage what would mainly be a youthful audience.

On a night in September 2008, the performance came to life at the Temasek Convention Centre, against the backdrop of an exciting interactive animation showcase. The concert, “Press Play…”, featured music pieces that were made more engaging with a seamless interplay of melody and imagery as students worked hand-in-hand with the SWS conductor on the concert repertoire to create and manage the animation. Together with the music, the animation left the audience captivated.
