Bake-off in Cambodia

Two Cambodian villagers savouring the fruit tartlets that they had just
learnt to bake from the TP students.

TWELVE Baking & Culinary Science (BCS) students headed to Cambodia in an Overseas Community Project (OCP) jointly organised with the Girls’ Brigade. The students made the six-day trip to the village of Baray where they conducted a series of baking demonstrations and hands-on practical sessions to the locals.

The TP students taught 16 enthusiastic villagers basic techniques of baking popular
items such as chocolate brownies, cookies, cream puffs and fruit tartlets. The participants were thrilled as they savoured their first taste of these goodies. The TP students also used this opportunity to emphasise important food safety and personal hygiene practices during food preparation and service. They also introduced the participants to essential baking skills that would help them to set up food carts to enhance their livelihood.

While the students’ stay in Baray was short, the learning experiences left deep and lasting impressions. Many became more appreciative of their comfortable lives in Singapore.

As Lim Wei Hao reflected, “There is an obvious change in all of us after this trip. This whole experience has made us realise how we ought to cherish every learning and teaching opportunity.”
