THREE students from the Diploma in Info-Communications have developed a new attendance system, called the “FingerScan Security System”, for Bukit Panjang Government High School (BPGHS).

The team modified the school’s existing Secure Access Control and Time Attendance System to make it compatible with new smart cards that contain RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags, hence enhancing security and reliability. Besides being able to mark and track the attendance of students and visitors, the new system also automatically sends an email to designated teachers to alert them when a student is absent or late for school. An interactive website with Flash animation has also been implemented to help users to understand and use the system.

The project, which is a collaboration with NGK Software House Pte Ltd, commenced in April and was completed in July. Extremely pleased with the project, Mr Tham Kong Foo, operations manager of Bukit Panjang Government High School, said: “Your students’ effort in making our system compatible with low-cost smart cards has resulted in cost-savings of $1,400 for us. We are grateful to TP for adding value to our school.”
