Healthcare? Anywhere! — new communication means for doctors and patients

The project students with their supervisor, Mr Barnabas Woon.

A PROJECT by eight students from TP’s Diploma in Info-Communications will provide a new means for doctors and patients in hospitals to communicate with each other.

Developed in collaboration with Philips Electronics Singapore Pte Ltd, the project called “Healthcare Anywhere” comprises a bedside LCD monitor called the “Bedside Companion”, and a hand-held device known as the “Mobile Physician”.

The Mobile Physician, which is essentially a 3G PDA phone, allows the doctor to remotely communicate with the patient via video conferencing, and to explain the latter’s medical condition with the aid of the patient’s imaging data that will be flashed on the bedside monitor. The “Bedside Companion” also serves as the patient’s one-stop infotainment centre, allowing him to watch TV and video on demand, and surf the web.

The project is currently a permanent exhibit at the “InnoHub”, Philip’s inspirational showcase of innovative home, office and healthcare concepts.

More of such collaborative projects between TP and Philips Electronics will be carried out under a Memorandum of Understanding signed by the two parties on July 21.
