It's hard not to get infected by the passion of these four students and the camaraderie among them. Admitted into Temasek Polytechnic (TP) via the Direct Polytechnic Admission (DPA) Exercise, they share their thoughts about securing a place at TP even before the exams and give tips on how you can do so too!

What made you apply to TP through DPA?

To me, TP School of Design is the best design school in Singapore. I stay in the west, but I don't mind spending an hour and a half (each way) getting to school every day because I want to be part of this great design community. And the fastest way to get in to TP is via DPA.

Two golden rules – prepare and research. Update your resume; bring recommendations, testimonials, everything that helps you show that you are right for the course of your choice. Then, make sure you find out more about the course.

What made you apply to TP through DPA?

DPA allowed me to secure a place in TP even before taking my O levels examination. With that, I was able to take my exams "in peace". Furthermore, DPA does not only depend on my results but also looks at my talent and interest in my course of choice.

Start thinking about what you want to do in the future and find a course that is suitable for you. Then start getting involved in things or activities that are related to the course.

What made you apply to TP through DPA?

DPA "sees" my interests and talents - beyond just my exam results - and I got a place at TP even before I started planning what time to wake up for my first O level exam paper. That was an awesome feeling!

I never knew I would have so much fun participating in the activities and bonding with new friends during the Polytechnic Preparatory Programme* (PPP). I thought it was just two extra months of work before school officially started. but I was wrong! yes, you get a head start by working on two subjects earlier, but you have two subjects fewer to mug when school officially starts.

*PPP – Polytechnic Preparatory Programme. DPA students participate in this eight-week programme which lets them broaden their learning experience, orientate themselves better to the poly environment, and build a stronger foundation for their poly studies.

What's special about the DPA experience?

We get to make new friends, clear two subjects before the semester starts, give back to society through community service activities, try out the food at all seven canteens, stay in Temasek green (the "hostel" located in TP) with other DPA students, go on field trips... all these experiences and more which I can summarise in one word, AWESOME.

When applying online, use the word limit to your advantage. Don’t be afraid to "sell yourself" (talk about your strengths).

Why DPA?
because it gives TP greater flexibility to select you based on a wider range of your talents other than your exam results. So if you have passion and talent in an area that may not be fully reflected in your exam results, DPA could be the path for you to secure a place in TP even before the O’s.

How do I apply?
you can apply for DPA via an online application system at
http://www.tp.edu.sg/events/dpa/ from 8-13 July 2011.
