Design

The list of Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) offered by the School of Design are:

Animating Cartoons (CODE: AEMTPMD004)

This module introduces students to the basics of animation and includes the understanding of the 12 principles of animation. It explains the need to apply some physics knowledge, such as weight, friction, force and gravity, into drawings in order to correctly depict life in animation.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • provide students with basic knowledge of traditional animation
  • develop students’ understanding of how different ways of timing can affect the movements of animation
  • explain the process of how traditional animation is produced

Note: This module is taught intensively over a 2-week or 10-day session during the secondary schools’ post-examination period or school vacation.

     

Advanced Elective Module - Animating Cartoons

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • improve their drawing skills
  • animate in traditional animation style
  • apply principles of animation in any animated project
  • exploit the use of different types of technology as tools in traditional animation
  • produce a 20-second animated piece

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Animated piece - 50% (Individual)
  • Composition and layout - 20% (Individual)
  • Drawing skills - 30% (Individual)

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.

Crafting Space & Form (CODE: AEMTPMD005)

This module focuses on developing the basic understanding of architectural space and form. The subject provides avenues to explore and visualize architectural forms in the third dimension.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • introduce design elements and principles that are fundamental to architecture and design
  • equip students with a basic understanding of interior architecture
  • enable students to explore three-dimensional (3D) designs

Note: This module is taught intensively over a 2-week or 10-day session during the secondary schools’ post-examination period or school vacation.

     

Advanced Elective Module - Crafting Space & Form

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • apply basic design principles and test application with reference to interior architecture.
  • appraise space and form as 3D entities
  • develop awareness of the basic language of interior architecture

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Presentation - 20% (Individual)
  • Project development - 80% (Individual)

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.

Digital Interiors (CODE: AEMTPMD006)

This module introduces students to the fundamentals of digital interior modelling.

Students can apply the basic principles of creating a three-dimensional (3D) experience through practical skills from this module to design an interior digital environment. Areas of interest will include light, colour and walkthroughs in presenting ideas digitally.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • introduce 3D digital designs
  • equip students with the fundamentals of digital interior modelling
  • enable students to simulate interior environments on computer

Note: This module is taught intensively over a 2-week or 10-day session during the secondary schools’ post-examination period or school vacation.

     

Advanced Elective Module - Digital Interiors

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • apply basic modelling functions in an interior space
  • use materials and lights to simulate an interior environment
  • develop awareness in creating a digital interior spatial experience

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Final presentation - 20% (Individual)
  • Interim assignment - 80% (Individual)

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.

Fashion Drawing (CODE: AEMTPMD002)

This module introduces students to the skills required to visually present their apparel design ideas to the apparel industry. Fashion drawing also allows the visual expression of fashion design ideas on paper using idealised fashion figures. These fashion sketches will show the silhouette, colours, fabrication, cuts, textures and details of the design.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • provide students with the knowledge and skills in sketching and rendering apparel design ideas for different market segments
  • enable students to acquire techniques using different art mediums to render various types of fabrication used in apparel designing
  • provide students the knowledge of layout techniques of presenting a collection of apparel designs

Note: This module is taught intensively over a 2-week or 10-day session during the secondary schools’ post-examination period or school vacation.

     

Advanced Elective Module - Fashion Drawing

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • recognise the basic body and proportions
  • recognise and differentiate various fashion silhouettes
  • identify different types of garments and their details
  • recognise the details and fabrication of the casual wear market
  • identify and render the different components of tailored outfits
  • identify the silhouettes, fabrics and colours that are important to evening wear

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Figure drawing (pose & proportion) - 40%
  • Line work & accuracy - 20%
  • Rendering (colour application) - 40%

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.

Fundamentals of Digital Media (CODE: AEMTPMD009)

This module introduces students to different methods and processes for preparing and integrating various multimedia elements such as type, images, graphics, audio and video into a single digital media project suitable for efficient delivery or mass distribution, for example, on the Internet.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • equip students with the basic knowledge and skills of various technology for producing digital media
  • provide students with the basic knowledge of integrating digital media
  • produce a final project

Note: This module is taught intensively over a 2-week or 10-day session during the secondary schools’ post-examination period or school vacation.

     

Advanced Elective Module - Fundamentals of Digital Media

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • produce a digital media video clip with a simple narrative
  • digitise, edit and manipulate various digital media for effective interactive animation
  • integrate various digital media resources or elements into a project
  • produce a final project

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Appropriateness of a solution - 30% (Individual)
  • Composition - 30% (Individual)
  • Technical competency - 40% (Individual)

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.

Fundamentals of Digital Photography (CODE: AEMTPMD007)

This module introduces students to the basics of digital photography. It provides students with the theoretical knowledge and the practical skills required to apply the basic principles of digital photography in image recording and image management, using the digital camera. Areas of interest will include camera types, framing of the image, characteristics of light, time control, correct exposure, angle of the lens and depth of field.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • provide students with the basic knowledge and understanding of the digital camera
  • develop the students’ knowledge of how different ways of framing can affect the emphasis and meaning of a subject matter
  • develop an awareness of how a photographic print is a two-dimensional composition of lines, shapes and patterns
  • develop the students’ knowledge of how the quality and direction of light can affect the mood and character of an image
  • explain how the selected period of time or “shutter speed” can affect the look of an image
  • explain the use of aperture control to bring emphasis to an image

Advanced Elective Module - Fundamentals of Digital Photography

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • operate the different controls and functions of the camera
  • apply principles in making an exposure by using aperture & shutter speed controls
  • exploit the usage of different type of lenses and their functions
  • compose and lay out an image within the frame of the camera

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Composition of images - 30% (Individual)
  • Ideation & narrative ability - 40% (Individual)
  • Quality of light - 30% (Individual)

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.

Ideas for Design (CODE: AEMTPMD008)

This module introduces students to the design process as a multi-disciplinary, student-centred learning approach to undertaking creative problem solving. This would enable the student to use this skill to discriminate information, create narratives, and establish and specify priorities of information. Students will also learn skills essential for recording and communicating their concepts and ideas and experience critique as a means of reasoning.

It will be conducted within a duration of 40 hours with a class size of 20.

Aims of AEM

  • introduce design process and ideation tools
  • hatch new ideas; to evaluate and filter to create a focus for design ideas
  • produce an innovative product design solution

Note: This module is taught intensively over a 2-week or 10-day session during the secondary schools’ post-examination period or school vacation.

     

Advanced Elective Module - Ideas for Design

Learning OutcomesAssessment Scheme and Completion Criteria

Students should be able to:

  • develop an awareness in basic industrial design process
  • develop basic ideation skills
  • apply basic 3D perspective drawing
  • apply basic Marquette making skills

Students will be assessed against the following criteria:

  • Final presentation - 50% (Individual)
  • Interim assignment - 50% (Individual)

Students are required to:

  • attend at least 80% of the lessons and
  • obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
