For more than the past ten years, Ms Boey Suit Yim, senior officer from Temasek Polytechnic’s International Relations and Industry department, has been reaching out to international students.

She acts as host family to international students, develops programmes to help them assimilate into the local culture, counsels them and mediates disputes for them.

Going beyond the call of duty, she even welcomes the parents of international students when they visit Singapore and acts as tour guide. She also recalls preparing meals for the parent of a student who was ill in hospital.

For these and too many other reasons to list, Ms Boey was presented the Friend of International Students Award at the Singapore Education Award on March 19, 2009. This Award honours an individual who has made exceptional contributions to the well-being of the international student community in Singapore and thereby contributed to the development of Singapore as a premier education hub.

Ms Boey dedicates this prestigious Award to all her friends who work together with her in caring for the well-being of international students in Singapore. When asked what drives her passion to work with international students, Ms Boey smiles and replies, “Offer to be a friend and the world will be your friend.”
