Wilson Yung

His lecturers describe him as the “silent achiever” while he considers himself to be a “little bit of a perfectionist”. No matter how you size him up, Wilson Yung Ying Kit is a TP milestone – he is the first TP graduate to be awarded the Singapore Government Scholarship (Open)by the Public Service Commission (PSC). He will pursue a Bachelor of Business Administration in NUS and hopes to do a double major in either Statistics or Economics.

Considered as one of the more highly regarded scholarships in Singapore, the PSC Scholarships provide scholars with a suite of development programmes designed to induct them into the Civil Service and give them valuable insights into public policy-making. Typically, a PSC Scholarship recipient is someone with a passion for learning and motivation to serve. He would possess strong leadership qualities and a desire to make a difference to others' lives. Wilson Yung fits the description to a T!

An alumnus of Dunman High School, Wilson was very sure that he was going to pursue a Diploma in Business at Temasek Polytechnic when he was in Secondary 3 because of his strong interest in banking and finance. Even his 4-point aggregate for his O levels did not change his mind – such is the focus and steadfast determination of this young gentleman. He went on to excel in every subject he took during his three years in TP, was on the Director’s Honours list each year and eventually graduated at the top of his class with a perfect 4 Grade Point Average. Wilson’s 31 distinctions and 1’A’ grade also saw him receive the Diploma in Business Course Gold Medal at his recent graduation. The self-confessed introvert is quick to credit his lecturers and other staff in TP who guided him and gave him many opportunities to excel.

In addition to his academic achievements, Wilson is an accomplished grade 8 cellist and is just as adept an organist. He was a member of the TP Chinese Orchestra from Year 1 and served as its Vice-President and President in Year 2 & 3 respectively. Under his able leadership, the orchestra received the coveted ‘Arts Group of the Year’ award in 2008. Needless to say, Wilson enjoys listening to classical music and regular pop songs.

A highlight during Wilson’s diploma studies was his Overseas Student Internship programme in Beijing China, where he was attached to the mortgage department of Standard Chartered Bank from September to November 2007. He earned much praise from his supervisors who described him as having a “strong sense of dedication and discipline” and being “an independent worker who takes the initiative and possesses good work attitude”.

A humble individual who thinks through his every action, Wilson would like to eventually use his skills to do “meaningful work” and help make a difference in society. For a 20-year old who always puts his optimum effort into everything he does so as to give of his best, this will definitely become a reality.

Congratulations Wilson! Temasek Polytechnic is proud of you and your achievements.
