When Adrian Lee first stepped foot into TP, little did he know that the next three years spent there was going to change his life forever. Nor did he have any clue that he would come out tops and be offered a place at the National University of Singapore to study architecture. This was a guy who had no prior background in design, but went forth with mere passion and dedication.
Enrolled into a new TP diploma course at the time, Retail & Hospitality Design, he was taken up by the very concept of the course. Having a say in the places where most people congregate, be it catching up with friends over dinner at a hot new restaurant, hanging out at the mall, or maybe chilling over drinks at the hippest bar, Adrian was determined to make a difference in the industry.
Instead of the ‘see-no-touch’ mentality most people have about design, he wanted it to be interactive – a part of people’s lives, not just a stand-alone sidekick. And that was exactly what he did for his final-year project, “The Culture Ave”, in which he played around with elements like volume and texture to create a common space that had the effect of walking in a cave.
Over the three years spent at TP, Adrian managed to build for himself an impressive portfolio, taking part in international competitions and overseas attachment programmes, which not only boosted his confidence in design, but also exposed him to various cultures.
Currently doing his National Service, the young talent is all smiles and eagerly waiting the new chapter of his design career. To those considering a future in design, he has this to share,
“Design is a really difficult path. But you can go far by staying committed and focused, and never give up.”
