1. How can I obtain a copy of Temasek Polytechnic's prospectus?

Please forward your request in writing to the following address together with the required payment of S$10 (local address) or S$15 (overseas address) per copy :

Your payment should be made in a bankdraft made out in Singapore currency to be drawn at a Singapore bank, crossed and made payable to "Temasek Polytechnic". Non-transferable bankdrafts are not acceptable. Please do not send cash.

2. What are the minimum entry requirements for holders of international qualifications?

Holders of international qualifications, who wish to gain admission to Temasek Polytechnic, must hold qualifications which are equivalent to the Singapore-Cambridge GCE 'O' level Certificate. Admission is based on merit.

3. Can I send more than one application?

No. Multiple applications for the same intake will render your entire application invalid.

4. How can I apply for exemptions?

No exemptions will be given. All international students are admitted to the first year of study.

5. Is there any age limitation?

There is no age limit.

6. When are classes held and for how long?

Classes are usually conducted from 8.00am to 6.00pm on Mondays to Fridays and 8.00am to 1.00pm on Saturdays with about 24-30 contact hours per week.

7. Are international students allowed to work part-time?

Full time undergraduates of Polytechnics and Universities are allowed to work part-time of up to 16 hours per week during school term and work full time during vacation as the Ministry of Manpower has exempted them from applying for work permits. There is no necessity to obtain any permission from the Student's Liaison/Affairs Office of their respective Polytechnics and Universities.

8. What financial assistance is available?

Your family should have sufficient finance for your 3-year education in TP. Do not plan your finances on the basis that you would find a job in Singapore. Application for part-time employment is subject to approval by the International Student Office (ISO) and the number of working hours per week must not exceed 16 hours. (Refer to Q6)

Tuition Grant Scheme - All full-time international students can apply for the tuition grant from the Singapore Government to enjoy subsidised education. Students will have to sign a deed with the Singapore Government to receive the tuition grant. In return for the benefit of subsidised education, students will be bonded to work in Singapore for three years upon completion of the course. Two sureties are required for executing the deed. The sureties can be of any nationality but must be above 21 years of age and must not be a bankrupt.

Tuition Fee Loans - All full-time international students may apply for tuition fee loans by 15 July. The guarantor must be a Singapore Citizen or Singapore Permanent Resident, be at least 21 years of age and shall not exceed 60 years of age.

9. How do I apply for a Tuition Grant?

You do not need to apply for Tuition Grant. Upon acceptance by the polytechnic, you are automatically offered the Tuition Grant. However, you can choose to accept or decline the offer. If you decide to take up the grant, you will be required to sign a bond with the Singapore Government to work for three years in Singapore upon completion of the course.

10. What are the obligations of my surety?

Is he/she liable to pay in the event that I default?A The main obligation of the surety is to ensure that the student fulfils his/her obligations of the Tuition deed. If the student defaults, the surety will have to pay the tuition grant subsidy the student received plus 10% compound interest.

11. How many international students does Temasek Polytechnic admit each academic year?

The number of international students admitted to Temasek Polytechnic each academic year is set at 10% of the total intake. There is no quota for each of the course.

12. When do students pay tuition fees?

Twice a year, in January and July.

13. If I take up the Tuition Grant, do I have to work for the Singapore Government?

No. Graduates can seek employment on their own in both private and public sectors.

14. How do I apply for immigration pass to study in Singapore?

You are required to apply for the Student Pass with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) of Singapore. Temasek Polytechnic will provide an acceptance letter to support the application for a Student Pass. However, applicants will need to make the necessary arrangement for the application of Student Pass and Entry Visa (if applicable) with ICA. The requirements of security deposit and local sponsors for all international students pursuing full-time diploma courses at the polytechnics have been waived by ICA. Application forms for Student Pass are obtainable from ICA's website at http://www.ica.gov.sg

15. What are the application deadlines?

There are two deadlines for application into the new academic year. International students who wish to gain entry into Temasek Polytechnic should send in their applications as soon as possible, by the end of September or the end of January. For example, the application deadlines for Academic Year 2000/2001 is 30th September 1999 and 31st January 2000. Completed applications received thereafter may be considered for the next available intake.

16. How do I move around Singapore?

Singapore has an efficient public transport services. The public bus services that will bring you to and fro Temasek Polytechnic are bus services 8, 15, 23, and 69. You can buy a Transit Link card at bus interchanges and MRT stations. The Transit Link card will enable you to travel on buses and MRT.

17. What identifications do I use in Singapore and Temasek Polytechnic?

You can use your passport or Student Pass in Singapore, and the Student Matric Card on the campus.

18. How do I open a bank account?

You can open a bank account and apply for an Automatic Teller Machine (ATM) card, only after you have obtained your Student Pass. You will receive the ATM card after 2 weeks of opening a bank account. The ATM card enables you to draw cash from ATM tellers throughout Singapore. Please note that you are to use your ATM card only with the specific bank where you open your bank account. Otherwise, you may have the unpleasant experience of your ATM card eaten by the machine. You will have to wait several weeks for the bank to return your card.

The campus has only a Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) / POSBANK Automatic Teller Machine (ATM). You may want to open a Savings Account with DBS or POSBANK for convenient ATM cash withdrawal on the campus.

You have to bring your passport and Student Pass when you open a bank account.
