SIP for Temasek Business School

The Temasek Business School is dedicated to developing total business skills in our students. The nine full-time courses offered are primarily market-driven. Courses have been specially designed to meet the manpower needs of the economy in key areas such as Finance, Tourism, Legal, Marketing, Media, Information Technology and Retail sectors. Emphasis is placed on equipping students with important life skills in problem-solving, presentation and communication, so as to better prepare students to take on the challenges of the working world.

Aim

Student internship provides students with the opportunity to put into practice in the real world the skills and knowledge they have acquired in their course of study.

Duration

The length of attachment ranges from 12 to 24 weeks as follows:

12-week SIP

15-week SIP

  • Diploma in Leisure & Resort Management

24-week SIP

  • Diploma in Communications and Media Management

Business students are required to attend on-campus classroom sessions ranging from 2 Saturdays to 5 Saturdays depending on the diploma.

Duties

We strongly encourage employers to give our students real jobs and responsibilities within their organisations. Participating companies are required to submit a training schedule, describing the duties of the SIP student(s).

Diploma in Accounting & Finance

The course in Accounting and Finance provides students with dual specialisations in accounting and finance, giving graduates flexibility in a wide choice of jobs. The Freshman-year curriculum includes foundation subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Principles of Management and Business Statistics.

After the Freshman-year, student are taught core subjects, which include Business and International Finance, Computerised Accounting System, Partnership & Company Accounts, Cost & Management Accounting, Auditing, Taxation & Fundamentals of Investment. In their Senior year, students will also be able to select two elective subjects from a range of Accounting and Finance subjects.

Particular attention is given to Business Communication, teamwork, thinking and problem solving skills. A strong emphasis is also placed on teaching of Information Technology.

Diploma in Business

Students of the Diploma in Business will receive a broad-based, sound training in the basics of business and management. They will be equipped to take on supervisory and executive level positions in business and industry. Graduates are expected to possess relevant business-related knowledge, good interpersonal skills, and be well versed in Information Technology.

They are also trained to have an international outlook, and be ready to act with integrity and commitment. The curriculum is specially designed to cover the core knowledge and skills in Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Human Resource Management and related areas such as Economics, Statistics, Computing, Enterprise and Law. In the Junior year, students may opt to specialise in 2 of the following areas : Human Resource Management, Banking, Finance & Investment, Tourism & Leisure Management, Corporate Communications, Logistics & Operations Management and Marketing.

Diploma in Business Information Technology

Jointly offered by Temasek Business School and Temasek IT School, the course is designed to equip students with both business and IT skills to meet the business challenges posed by the knowledge-based economy. Fundamental business concepts in Marketing, Economics, Accounting, Statistics, E-Business Management as well as Enterprise Resource Management are the crux of the business modules. Essential IT skills in computer systems, Internet and Information Systems in Organisation, Networked Multimedia, Systems Analysis and Design, Object-Relational Database and E-Business Application Development, Practice of Technopreneurship will be the linchpin in this diploma. Students are given the opportunity to integrate and apply the knowledge and skills acquired through state-of-the-art learning facilities such as the E-Business Centre, Business Technology Lab, Silicon Studios, Computer Systems Lab and SAP's Application Hosting.

Diploma in Communications & Media Management

The course aims to produce media and communications specialists to meet the needs of this dynamic and growing industry. Students of the Diploma in Communications & Media Media Management will receive sound knowledge and skills required to function as an effective member of the media and/or the numerous media-related business.

All students are introduced to the fundamentals of communications & media in their first year. Building on this foundation, students go on to focus on key sectors of the media industry such as Broadcasting, Journalism, Multimedia, Media Management and Marketing. While the students have consistently achieved excellent grades in their assessments, we believe that a 23-week internship programme would allow them to apply what they have learnt in the working world.

Diploma in Law & Management

The course equips students with general business knowledge, skills and sufficient training in legal matters to function as para-legal professionals in a legal office environment.

All students undergo a programme similar to other Business students in the first year, but with a stronger emphasis on the management of the legal office environment. They are taught foundational business subjects such as Accounting, Economics, Organisational Behaviour, Computing, Legal Communication Skills as well as foundational legal principles in the subject Legal Systems and Methods. In their second and third years, they study a wide range of substantive and procedural law subjects which equips them with the knowledge and skills to function as a para-legal executive.

Diploma in Logistics & Operations Management

This course is designed to give students a strong foundation in business studies and specialised training in the field of Logistics and Operations Management. It equips students with the knowledge, skills and attitude needed by employers in logistics, manufacturing and service industries. Much of the instructional and learning materials, and methodologies used are computer-based. Emphasis is placed on software application packages in current use in the industry. The training also focus on team-building, problem solving and human-relations skills.

Diploma in Marketing

Students of the Diploma in Marketing will receive a broad-based, sound training in marketing. At the end of the course, the graduate is a well-balanced individual with a global outlook. This individual is well-equipped to take up a challenging career in marketing-related jobs at supervisory or executive level position.

Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Management

The course is designed to prepare students for a career in the hospitality & tourism industry. Students will be firmly groomed in both the essential knowledge and practical skills particularly needed to enter employment in the airlines, the arts, conventions, hotels, restaurants, visitor attractions, resorts and other hospitality & tourism service sectors.

The students in the course are introduced to business and management fundamentals in their first year. Building on this foundation, the second and third years focus on studies in the key sectors of the tourism industry such as travel operations, transportation, events, meeting and exhibition services and visitor attractions. A 23-week internship programme provides the students an opportunity to develop human relationship skills in a business environment.

The course has a practical orientation and develops in students professional skills to work in this dynamic industry.

Diploma in Hospitality & Tourism Business

The 2-year course is designed to prepare students for a global career in the hospitality & tourism industry. Students will be firmly groomed in both the essential knowledge and practical skills particularly needed to enter employment in the airlines, arts, events, conventions, hotels, restaurants, visitor attractions, resorts, travel, leisure services and other hospitality & tourism services.

Majority of the students in the course come from regional countries after 12 years of education in their home country. They are introduced to business and management fundamentals and given a broad understanding of key sectors in the hospitality and tourism industry. Twice a year, the 15-week internship programme provides the students an opportunity to develop communication, problem solving and inter-personal relationship skills in a business environment.

The course has a practical orientation and develops in students professional skills to work in this dynamic industry.

Diploma in Retail Management

The Diploma in Retail Management provides industry-relevant education and training to its students on the processes, technologies and trends of retail management. Graduates from the Retail Management Diploma are able to contribute positively to both large and small retailers alike in Singapore and the region in order to endeavour to deliver higher customer service standards in the different spheres of retailing operations. Specific skills will be acquired in this diploma through subjects such as Marketing, Advertising and Promotions, Merchandise Buying, Retail Visual Merchandising, Retail Branding International Retailing and Mall Management.

Diploma in Culinary & Catering Management

The focus of this course is on food & beverage operations and management in the culinary & catering industry. Students are trained in restaurant service and operations as well as culinary techniques to fully appreciate the intricacies of food & beverage operations and management.  Coached by lecturers and instructors with extensive experience and in state-of-the-art facilities, the students are put through their paces with the aim of becoming food & beverage professionals with excellence as a guiding principle.  Students going out on internship have completed a 600-hour intensive culinary program co-taught by Chefs from the Culinary Institute of America.

Diploma in Leisure & Resort Management

This course aims to give students maximum exposure to a comprehensive spectrum of leisure and resort businesses that will enable students to be a part of the industry. It will allow students to be on the pulse of some of the most exciting businesses in the tourism industry. Students will find the course both challenging and rewarding, with ample real-life learning opportunities through exposure to industry. In addition, it affords students the flexibility to move into myriad leisure businesses.

The curriculum strongly emphasises three major segments of the tourism industry: the Resort business, Leisure business and Meetings and Event business. In each area, students will be exposed to key aspects of operating and managing resorts and leisure entities such as clubs, spas, attractions and cruise ships. Students will also have hands-on experience in organising meetings and events. Their ability to plan, analyse and strategise will also be critically honed.
