Diploma in Apparel Design & Merchandising

Apparel Design & Merchandising incorporates the complete cycle of "Fashion" which includes the designing, sourcing, manufacturing, merchandising, marketing and retailing.

The course specialises in three main areas of study. The first area, Apparel Design, incorporates the production activities involved in acquiring fabric and trims, the manufacture and development of apparel items for men, women and children. These would include the manipulation and experimentation of textile and trims to generate ideas, which would then be translated into three-dimensional form through pattern drafting and/or draping and sewing.

In the second area of Merchandising, students will learn how to manage product development from design concepts to the end consumer. This encompasses global sourcing, costing, textile and apparel manufacturing, marketing and management. General business management includes business communications, purchasing, operations, information systems and human resource management. With the growing emphasis on quality in the industry, students also explore the latest in textiles and apparel quality assurance.

In the third area, Visual Merchandising, students will have hands on experiences in the various aspects of advertising and promotion for the apparel industry. This encompasses spatial designing, retail merchandising, styling, window display, store layout, exhibition and fashion show production.
