SIP for Temasek Engineering School

The Temasek Engineering School is dedicated to preparing students for a practice-oriented and upwardly mobile and professional career in Engineering. Students have access to a team of dedicated lecturers, with proven track record in industry and enjoy the use of state-of-the-art equipment to aid their learning. Indeed, Temasek Polytechnic is proud to be the first tertiary institution in Singapore to be awarded a VSAT licence to operate private satellite communication links. Other facilities found in the School of Engineering include a Language Development Centre, Prototyping labs capable of double-sided-plated-through technology for PCB, expanded CAD/CAE/CAM and Rapid Prototyping facilities.

Aim

Work attachments help students to link theoretical knowledge with the practical working world, as well as enable them to adapt more competently to their future employment.

Duration

All engineering students are required to undergo 14 weeks of student internship.

Duties

We encourage employers to give our students real jobs and responsibilities within their organisations. Participating companies are required to submit a training schedule and a description of the duties of the SIP student(s).

Diploma in Aviation Management and Services

Students are equipped with a broad range of specialised skills and knowledge to meet the needs and challenges across aviation industry; from managing a world class airport, to understanding what it takes to run the best airline in the world. Students will also discover what goes into operating the world’s largest airliner, the Airbus A380 and acquire knowledge on the inner workings of a "spaceport" that will one day send passengers beyond the stars.

Diploma in Biomedical Informatics & Engineering

The Biomedical Informatics & Engineering course is an inter-disciplinary course that involves the application of computer-based information processing and engineering skills to the biomedical sciences. It is a broad based course that aims to integrate the three key areas that support the life sciences industries, namely Biology, Information Technology and Engineering. Students will learn the necessary information technology skills and biology techniques, and apply them in the fields of medical informatics and biomedical engineering.

Diploma in Business Process & Systems Engineering

The Business Process & Systems Engineering course equips graduates with systems thinking, integration and facilitation skills, which are so essential in today's market environment. Graduates will possess the unique ability to integrate both business and engineering principles to serve on cross-functional teams that drive improvements and productivity towards organisational excellence.

Graduates from Business Process & Systems Engineering will be among the selectedfew who possess the vital ability to integrate both business and engineering knowledge with a "Systems Thinking" approach. Students learn about "Process Optimisation and Improvement", a unique module which provides an overview of concepts including analysis of statistical control results, experimental designs, variations in processes andimprovement techniques.

Diploma in Computer Engineering

The Computer Engineering course equips students with specialised skills in the key technology areas of electronics, computing and communications. The three-year course provides a good foundation in both hardware and software aspects of computer systems, increases the level of skills in designing computer systems for a variety of engineering applications, and demonstrates how computer engineering dovetails into developments in Internet technology.

Special emphasis is placed on the understanding of the architecture and design of computers and communication systems. Graduates also receive effective training in communication skills for the workplace, management and problem-solving. In view of the increasing need for students to develop life-skills to cope with the demands of the industry, the Diploma in Computer Engineering is offered through a problem-based learning mode of instruction.

Diploma in Electronics

The Electronics course equips students with the theory and practice to meet the changing needs of the industry. It provides them with a solid foundation in the principles and applications of electronic devices, circuits, and systems.

Special emphasis is on the utilisation of computers, communication, control and manufacturing systems. Students also develop effective communication skills for the work place and skills in project planning and implementation. Through various problem-solving and team concepts, students take pride in their ability to learn, grow and prosper in the dynamic industry as electronics professionals.

Diploma in Info-Communications

This course equips students with the knowledge and application of both IT and telecommunications technologies to serve the rapid growth of the Info-communications industry in Singapore. One feature is the strong emphasis on the practical application of IT and telecommunication integrated skills. Another feature is the industrial certification that students receive through their in-house training and certification programme in the second year.

Graduates will be able to harness the technologies of IT and telecommunications to enhance the growth of the industry or new services and applications.

Diploma in Integrated Facility Design and Management

This course equip students with business, design and engineering fundamentals that provide a strong platform for the hospitality industry and the application of facility management in areas such as finance, quality assessment, planning, infocomm, automation, security and design.  Students are trained with skills to professionally manage the physical, aesthetic, environmental and engineering aspects of the facility.

Diploma in Intelligent Building Technology

Conceptualised and introduced in direct response to industrial needs and national development, the Intelligent Building Technology course aims to play a key role in helping Singapore realise its IT2000 vision of an intelligent island. The course prepares students for the paradigm shift in the implementation of concepts and available technology in the building industry.

Students are trained in the principles and applications of key topics in building services, building and office automation, and information technology. The three-year course will empower students to integrate these various disciplines and implement them in buildings as intelligent systems. Besides being trained to design, install, manage, and maintain intelligent systems for buildings, students can be expected to develop effective skills in communication and project management.

Diploma in Mechatronics

The course equips students with the theory and practice to meet the changing needs of the manufacturing and processing industries. The curriculum provides a strong foundation in electronics, mechanical, and computing systems. Students gain knowledge that is focused on issues of product and process design, factory automation, robotics, machine vision, and manufacturing logistics. The course trains them to be innovative and creative in a practical way.

Students also develop effective communication skills for the workplace, and skills in project planning and implementation. Mechantronics graduates take pride in their abilities and have the confidence to learn, grow and prosper with the industry as professionals. This course has also been awarded the prestigious recognition of an Exemplary Training Model in Industrial Technology by the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC).

Diploma in Microelectronics

The course provides the students with a strong foundation in the electronics and microelectronics disciplines. The emphasis of the course is practice-oriented learning. Students will have the opportunity to design, fabricate, construct and test ICs. There will be laboratory exercises, computer-aided design assignments, mini-projects, handling of "state-of-the-art" microelectronics-related equipment and a final year project.

After going through the course, the students will be equipped with technical skills such as the use of basic electronic and microelectronics-related equipment, and effective communication skills. The students will also be knowledgeable in computers, and analogue and digital systems.

Diploma in Telecommunications

The course provides a good foundation in the fundamentals of electronics and telecommunications, with emphasis on practice-oriented learning. The first year of the course is common with the Electronics course. In the second year, the students read specific telecommunication subjects and take electives in the final year for further specialisation.

Students are exposed to the formal telecommunication standards and practices, which equip them with the most current techniques for successfully implementing and using a telecommunication system. Effective communication skills for the workplace and skills in project planning and problem-solving are taught.
