University Preparatory Programme - Mathematics

Course Description

There is an increasing trend of polytechnic graduates taking further education beyond their polytechnic diplomas. Polytechnic graduates who are pursuing university degrees in Engineering or Science often experience the difference in the mathematics rigor between polytechnic and university education. Specialised mathematical courses are needed to bridge the difference. Students who are equipped with higher level mathematical concepts and techniques will be better prepared for university mathematics.

This short course equips participants with the knowledge of intermediate calculus and covers topics such as:

  • Improper Integrals
  • Infinite Series
  • Complex Numbers
  • Vectors
  • Partial Differentiation
  • Multiple Integrals
  • Ordinary Differential Equations

Course Objectives

On completion of this course, participants should be able to:

  • Calculate improper integrals using limit techniques;
  • Determine the convergence of an infinite series;
  • Define complex numbers and solve equations in complex variables;
  • Construct line and plane equations in 3D space;
  • Measure distances in 3D space using vectors;
  • Identify quadric surfaces and their equations;
  • Calculate partial derivatives of a multi-variable function;
  • Calculate multiple integrals;
  • Solve Ordinary Differential Equations.

Course Outline

  • Techniques in Calculating Improper Integrals
  • Convergence of Infinite Series
  • Introduction to Complex Numbers
  • Introduction to 3D Vectors and Quadric Surfaces
  • Calculus of Multi-variable Functions
  • Techniques in Solving Ordinary Differential Equations
