Module Overview

Are you familiar with the saying, ‘Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink’? This ApLM highlights the sources of water in nature and explores water processing technology, including that of waste water, through an array of lectures, interactive tutorials, creative project work and hands-on practical sessions. Students will also analyse the quality of water in terms of its physical, chemical and microbiological properties and discuss the various uses of water in everyday life. You will never take your H20 for granted again! 

 

This module will be conducted within a duration of 22.5 hours.

 

What You'll Learn

At the end of the module, students will be able to:

 

  1. Describe the physical and chemical properties of water
  2. Differentiate the sources, roles and quality of water in various contexts
  3. Explain microbiological quality of various sources of water and list the common waterborne pathogens and sources of water contamination available and their characteristics
  4. Explain and perform simple microbiological analysis of water samples
  5. Explain the chemical aspects of water quality and perform simple physical and chemical analysis of water samples
  6. Explain the conventional water treatment and water reclamation processes
  7. Explain the various methods employed for desalination process
  8. State how advanced technology can enhance water treatment and conduct water treatment for NEWater production etc.

 

Assessment Components

 

Students will be assessed based on the following:

 

  1. Class participation 
  2. Test 
  3. Practical 

 

Completion criteria

 

Students are required to:

 

  • Fulfill at least 67% of the attendance and
  • Obtain a pass mark of at least 50% upon completion of the module.
