Course Overview

The subject covers waste sources, characteristics, generation, collection, transfer and transport as well as the various solid waste and hazardous waste treatment methods. Hazardous waste topics such as classification and waste minimization will be covered. Waste minimization through waste recycling, reuse and recovery will be emphasized.

 

 

Objectives

 

This subject aims to equip students with the basic knowledge and skills to:

  • Describe the importance of solid and hazardous waste characteristics.  
  • Apply solid and hazardous waste treatment technologies in chemical, pharmaceutical as well as environment and water industries.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

Modes of Assessment

 

●      Assignments – assess student’s understanding of key concepts covered in lectures, their ability to solve the application questions.

●      Tests / Quizzes – measure students’ understanding of key concepts and application of concepts learnt for each topic.

●      Class Participation – measure students’ attitudes and discipline towards learning in terms of completion of assignments and active participation in discussions.

 

 

Certification

 

Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Applied Science (Chemical Technology).
