Course Overview

This course covers basic concepts of thermodynamics, properties of common substances such as water, air and general working fluids, the first law of thermodynamics and its application to both closed and open systems. Topics include the first law of thermodynamics, properties of liquids and vapours, non-flow processes with steam, steady flow processes with steam, properties of perfect gases, and non-flow processes with perfect gases, the second law of thermodynamics and application to heat engines.

 

 

Objectives

 

Students will be able to:

  • Acquire basic knowledge in thermodynamics;
  • State the first law of thermodynamics and the second law of thermodynamics; and
  • Differentiate between properties of liquids and vapours, non-flow and steady flow processes with steam, perfect gas and non-flow processes with perfect gas.

Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.

Continual Assessment 60 %

Semestral Examination 40%

 

 

Certification

 

Upon successful completion of the modular course, students will be issued’ a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Engineering (Aerospace).
