Course Overview

Ever wondered whether the person taking your blood, when you go for blood tests, is doing it in a safe and reliable manner?


In this course, you will learn the necessary theoretical and practical skills to take blood from the patient’s vein in a safe and accurate manner for laboratory investigations.  You will learn step-by-step how to communicate with the patient, take the patient’s blood, and make the whole blood taking process a pleasant encounter for the patient.


Graduates of this course are eligible to sit for the International Phlebotomy Technician examination conducted by the American Society for Clinical Pathology (PBT)(ASCPi) to be internationally qualified.

Entry Requirements

(a) Applicants must be currently employed as phlebotomists or trainee phlebotomists in the organization. Healthcare workers or nurses whose daily routine includes phlebotomy can also apply for this course. 

 

(b) Minimum 3 GCE “O” levels with passes in English Language, Mathematics and Science subjects preferably Biology or equivalent.

 

(c) Applicants with foreign or other qualifications will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

 

(d) Applicant must be able to produce the evidence of Hepatitis B (HBV) immunization taken with the last 2 years from the start date of the course and/or show Hepatitis B antibody (anti-HBs) level of  >10mIU/ml. Those who are HBsAg positive (regardless of HBeAg status) will not be enrolled.

 

(e) For Company Sponsored Applicants

  • Letter of Support from his/her company stating support for their employees to attend the course; AND to provide clinical placement for their employee, who will be supervised by a Singapore licensed physician or practising certified phlebotomist. The clinical placement is for the applicant to do the 50 independent phlebotomies under the supervision of Singapore licensed physicians or practising certified phlebotomists.
     

     For Self-sponsored applicants

  • Letter of clinical placement provision from a licensed healthcare facility must be submitted. Applicants also need to ensure that the licensed healthcare facility that they sourced, will provide supervision by a Singapore licensed physician or practising certified phlebotomist. The clinical placement is for the applicant to do the 50 independent phlebotomies under the supervision of Singapore licensed physicians or practising certified phlebotomists.

Please note that TP does not arrange for clinical placement for participants. Participants who are unable to make the necessary arrangement may still apply for the course and obtain the Certificate in Phlebotomy (Theory) upon passing the Theory Assessment.

 

Please note that selected applicants might be called up for interview.

Note: A Theory Assessment will be held approximately 2 weeks after the 3 days course.

  • Skin Puncture and Dummy Arm Practice 

  • Phlebotomy Exercise 

     

Note: An audit will be conducted to assess participants’ phlebotomy skill. Participant has to pass the Theory Assessment before the audit is conducted.


Verification of Phlebotomy Skills
 

After the 3 days course, participants are required to complete 50 independent phlebotomies, under the supervision of an appointed doctor from their healthcare organization. After participants have completed the 50 independent phlebotomies, Temasek Polytechnic will send a trainer on site at the participant’s organization to conduct an audit to assess the phlebotomy skills of the participant.

 

A Letter of Support from the participant’s organization should be submitted during the point of application. Read more on the Letter of Support below.

 

 

Certification
 

Participant who has met the minimum 75% attendance requirement, satisfactorily completed at least fifty (50) phlebotomies first draw independently at their own organization and pass the theory assessment will be awarded a "Certificate in Phlebotomy" by Temasek Polytechnic.

 

Participant who has met the minimum 75% attendance requirement and pass the theory assessment will be awarded a "Certificate in Phlebotomy (Theory)" by Temasek Polytechnic.
