International Women's Day - 1

Transforming Aspirations into Achievements

My journey into the tech industry was far from straightforward, and the SkillsFuture Career Transition Programme (SCTP) helped turn my aspirations into tangible achievements. Jointly organised by Temasek Polytechnic and Generations Singapore, SCTP offered the care, guidance, and support crucial for navigating a successful mid-career transition.

In addition to imparting technical and soft skills, SCTP provided a unique platform for connecting with potential employers. This invaluable opportunity led to an internship at JJ Innovation, paving the path to my current role as the Head of Technology Sales and Services.

My journey stands as a testament to the enduring power of perseverance and hard work, irrespective of gender. To all the remarkable women out there, never let anything hinder your pursuit of dreams in the tech realm. Programmes like SCTP exist to empower and equip you with the necessary tools for success.

Believe in your capabilities, embrace the challenges that come your way, and venture forth to conquer the ever-evolving world of technology!

Empowering Transformations

Deciding to enrol in both Temasek Polytechnic (TP) and Singapore Management University was like hitting the metaphorical 'restart button' in my life. The past decade was dedicated to wholeheartedly caring for my children. Now, it's time to give myself the opportunity to broaden my knowledge and skills through learning. This is not just a personal growth journey but a chance to face my current workplace challenges with renewed confidence.

Presently employed as a Data Analyst in a high-tech manufacturing company, I assume responsibilities involving data transmission and server management. My role requires me to collaborate with global counterparts across Southeast Asia, the United States, and Europe.

Juggling two courses concurrently has injected a newfound sense of fulfilment into my life. I attest that interpersonal interactions expand one's horizons, shaping perspectives not only professionally but also influencing personal lifestyles and decision-making processes. I extend this philosophy to my parenting approach, advocating exposure to diverse alternatives rather than limiting my children to singular pathways.

I aim to convey a message of empowerment to women hesitant to initiate change. I underscore the importance of embracing the inaugural step, inspiring others to commence their transformative journeys. By catalysing one change within my own life, I believe in laying the foundation for subsequent transformative strides in alternate directions.

A Journey of Growth and Adaptation

Reflecting on my journey after graduating from TP with a Diploma in Financial Business Informatics, I embarked on the Work-Study Programme (WSP). Through WSP, I secured a data consultant role and completed a Specialist Diploma in Big Data & Analytics at TP. Later, I pursued a Bachelor of Technology (Business Analytics) at NUS while working concurrently, eventually transitioning to freelance consulting.

My key takeaways from WSP: Salary, Mentorship, and Experience (S.M.E.). I encourage graduates to explore similar paths, emphasising the benefits of earning a full-time salary, receiving mentorship, and gaining practical work experience simultaneously.

Today, as a lecturer in the Diploma in Big Data & Analytics at TP, I look forward to sharing my journey and knowledge while continually enhancing my skills through professional certifications.

Looking back on the past decade, my career path has undergone remarkable transformations. While I initially envisioned a career in banking, I embraced roles as a data consultant and now as a lecturer. This evolution resonates with Lauren Mosenthal's timeless insight: 'Life is a series of building, testing, changing, and iterating.' So, remember, keep advancing yourself!
