At Temasek Polytechnic, we are held together by our long and proud history, which has given rise to many traditions and events that make up the TP culture. From the hustle and bustle of Campus Care Network (CCN), a carnival to raise donations for students in financial need, the intense hype and team-building during Regatta (our annual dragon boat racing), to the pursuit of learning and upskilling with SkillsFuture, TP’s caring, fun-loving and learning elements reign supreme.

At TP, we believe every student should be given the opportunity to achieve their personal best. Our Temasek Leadership Programme (Temasek LEAD) aims to groom our high-performing students into leaders with vision, character and heart, beyond academic pursuits. We nurture them to become self-directed learners while providing them access to many advanced facilities to ensure they graduate as well-rounded, industry-ready professionals who can contribute generously to the global community.

How It All Began

In a speech he made in June 1989, Dr Tony Tan (then the Minister for Education) announced that a third polytechnic "was being seriously considered."

That was us.

In July 1990, Temasek Polytechnic was established with an initial enrolment of 735 students. While our actual campus was being built, TP was granted use of Baharuddin Vocational Institute's (BVI) premises at Stirling Road and the vacated premises of Raffles Institution at Grange Road.

Our Early Years

TP's first four diploma courses were in graphic design, product design, interior design and business.

The design courses were programmes originally conducted at Baharuddin Vocational Institute (BVI) a reputable forerunner in design education in Singapore. The Diploma in Business was a brand new creation, together with a new School of Business in TP.

By our second year, we introduced new courses in electronics, information technology, mechatronics, tourism management and logistics & operations management.

Within five years, TP grew rapidly and acquired three more campuses at Kim Seng, Bukit Merah and Portsdown Road for a total of five satellite campuses. Our number of first-choice applicants increased from 735 in 1990 to 5,443 in 1995.

Our Own Home At Last

Finally in September 1995, we moved to our permanent and current location in Tampines - a state-of-the-art 30-hectare campus set beside Bedok Reservoir.

For the first time, over 6,500 staff and students were brought together under one roof.

The polytechnic continued to grow and as of today, our student population stands at over 14,000 and staff population at nearly 1,500. TP now offers 37 diploma courses across six schools.

Towards The Future

Not only have we expanded our learning facilities, we are fully focused on catering to the needs of our TP community. As we move in the direction of lifelong learning, you will find numerous opportunities to reskill and upskill with new customised programmes.

Global opportunities bring global perspectives and we continue to enable our staff and students to learn beyond shores, with various experiences outside the classroom.

On board with Singapore’s Smart Nation strategy, TP promotes digital business strategies and initiatives such as the launch of the TP-HRG Robotics Innovation Centre and our very own website chatbot.

We also continue to forge strategic partnerships to broaden our network and improve our core industry competencies. The new and improved campus immerses us into a digital, dynamic and versatile learning environment that will power us into the future of education.
