“TP has stretched, expanded, and broadened my world!”
Top Graduate of the Diploma in Veterinary Technology (Class of 2015) Rena Tan Hui Shan Reflects on Her ‘Incredible Journey’ in TP.
I have always had a natural affinity for animals from a tender age – they have been a big part of my life, from the pets I have kept to the frequent visits to the nearby pet shops and the zoo. Because of my love for animals, I have always dreamed of becoming a Veterinarian, and hence my mind was set on joining Temasek Polytechnic’s Diploma in Veterinary Technology.
Enrolling into the course was a dream come true, and I was determined to do well during my time in Temasek Polytechnic. Looking back, I was never amongst the top - the crème de la crème - in CHIJ Kellock or Tanjong Katong Girls’ School, until I stepped into this wonderful campus that I can proudly call my second home.
Even though I excelled academically in Temasek Polytechnic, my journey was not always smooth sailing. I believe the key to my success is the desire to achieve the goals that I have set for myself. Sheer hard work, perseverance, as well as a strong sense of discipline helped me through my roller coaster ride. In addition to having a positive mindset, the support and encouragement from my family, peers and lecturers really motivated me to press on…
Apart from having an avid interest in the field of Veterinary Science, I am fascinated by the developments in the field of Biomedical Science as well. This was sparked by the many medical-related conversations I often have with my brother, who is a doctor. My interest grew stronger after taking modules such as Fundamentals of Pathology. Through the many laboratory sessions in school, the attachment stints at various laboratories and veterinary clinics, and my Student Internship Programme at the Singapore Zoological Gardens, I believe my calling is in the field of Biomedical Science. I look forward to the next chapter in my life, pursuing the degree in Life Sciences in the National University of Singapore. After university, I hope to work in the research industry.
Aside from books, I have a strong passion for Netball. Being in the school Netball team has kept me healthy, fit and stress-free. I took every Netball training session as a chance for me to de-stress, and to enjoy the sport I love with the amazing coach and team that I had.
Netball as well as other activities such as Orientation camps and outings with my peers enabled me to have a balanced, healthy life and devote time for my studies at the same time.
I cannot thank Temasek Polytechnic enough for this incredible journey. The school has given me friends whom I would keep for life, stretched me, taken me out of my comfort zone, and enabled me to achieve so much more than I thought I could. It has challenged me to adapt to real life situations, expanded my mind, and broadened my perspective. In short, the school has prepared me well for the real world.
I see myself working in the research industry a few years down the road. That would be my way of giving back to society. I am extremely grateful for the opportunities I have been given to realise my potential. Thank you Temasek Polytechnic!
