They ‘Created’ Lion City
by Vimala Christie
Five students from IIT’s Game Design & Development course were handpicked to work on a mobile game for MINDEF, as their major project. Lau Zhan Liang Martin, Hing Zi Yang Benedict, Tan Ri Wei Gabriel, Soh Shing Hao and Jed Goh Yujie were tasked to come up with a game which highlights how individual actions contribute towards building and sustaining a strong and cohesive community that can overcome crises.
The students designed a mobile game application where players build the ‘Lion City’ with the key Total Defence messages embedded at different stages of the game. So while players learn about actions related to Psychological, Social and Economic Defence, they are also required to build and defend a safe and happy nation through their combined effort. Lion City was so impressive that it was shortlisted as one of two finalists from MINDEF vying for an innovation award worth $50K at SAF’s Pride Day on 3 and 4 October.
Team member, Martin Lau, shared: “Through the development of Lion City, I have gained many unforgettable experiences and lessons. The most enriching experience was working as a team, together with our client, as they were very supportive of our ideas and helped provide constructive criticism and input to refine the game. Each member of the team was essential as we had a part to play in creating different segments of the game. No one was afraid to voice their opinions and this created a fun and conducive environment which made the entire experience highly satisfying”.
The team’s experience during the two-day Pride Day event was made even more memorable as MINDEF presented the project on behalf of the team, to a high-level group headed by the Minister for Defence, Dr Ng Eng Hen. Also, the Chief of Defence Force, Singapore Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Melvyn Ong, visited the team at their booth and tried his hand at playing Lion City.
