Specialist Diploma in Biopharmaceutical Technology


The aim of the part-time Specialist Diploma in Biopharmaceutical Technology programme is to prepare or re-profile graduates for work in the pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical and related industries. It also serves as a platform for individuals who are already working in a related industry to upgrade or update their skills and knowledge.

On completion of the course, graduates will have:

  • theoretical and practical knowledge/skills to work in a manufacturing facility for the biopharmaceutical industry; and
  • knowledge in Good Manufacturing Practice so that they are better prepared for work in the pharmaceutical industry


Target Participants
This course is targeted at diploma graduates and PMEs who are keen to enter the field of pharmaceutical or biopharmaceutical and related industries.

Course Frequency:

Post- Diploma Certificate in Upstream Bioprocess Manufacturing (Oct Semester):
3 times a week, usually on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-10pm.

Post- Diploma Certificate in Downstream Bioprocess Manufacturing (Apr Semester):
3 times a week, usually on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7-10pm.

What You Will Learn

To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Biopharmaceutical Technology, participants are required to complete a total of 2 post-diploma certificates (PDCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each PDC.

Post- Diploma Certificate in Upstream Bioprocess Manufacturing

ABP0101

This subject covers the principles of cell culture technology for the production of biologics for therapeutic purposes.  It emphasizes the importance of media preparation, aseptic procedures, cell bank preparation and the application of different cell culture processes in biopharmaceuticals production.  In addition, the subject also discusses different analytical techniques for measuring the quantity and quality of products in a culture.

ABP0102

This subject covers the different operations involved in the use of bioreactors, with emphasis on process monitoring, inoculation and aseptic sampling.  Other operations covered include the setup, cleaning and sterilisation of bioreactors.  In addition, the subject also deals with the different types of bioreactor processes.

ABP0103

This subject focuses on the concept of quality systems, emphasizing the relationship between QA, GMP and QC and their fundamental importance to the production and control of biopharmaceutical products. It also emphasizes on how a Validation Master Plan (VMP) should be prepared and highlights the typical manufacturer’s overall validation philosophy and approach to establish documented evidence such that the facility, equipment and test methods are suitable for their intended use.

This subject provides an overview of the downstream processing of biologics for therapeutic purposes. The subject will focus on the principles and techniques involved in centrifugation, cell disruption and different forms of filtration including tangential flow filtration.

ABP0202

This subject focuses on the principles and techniques involved in purification by chromatography. The use of different analytical techniques to evaluate the safety, purity, quality, bioactivity and yield of the product will also be covered. The techniques include ELISA, SDS PAGE and western blot method. It will also cover the importance of GMP in downstream processing.

Minimum Entry Requirements

 At least a Polytechnic Diploma or ITE Technical Diploma/Technical Engineer Diploma/Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Science or Engineering, or equivalent.

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
