Specialist Diploma in Energy Management & Sustainable Design

The course aims to equip students with the knowledge of various building systems and develop competency in sustainable design concepts, energy audit and management, application of energy efficiency technologies and energy economy.

Upon graduating from the course, graduates will be able to:

  • Understand the working principle of building Mechanical and Electrical (M&E) systems including Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation (ACMV) system, motor driven systems such as pumps and fans, electrical services and lighting systems
  • Interpret BIM drawings of building systems for maintenance
  • Apply energy saving strategies for M&E systems
  • Assist in the conducting of energy audit measurements and data-logging
  • Conduct basic building data analytics for energy management
  • Undertake basic efficiency evaluation of energy & utility systems
  • Assist in the preparation of measurements, monitoring and verification report
  • Understand and apply sustainable design concepts for buildings
  • Evaluate main building systems inter-relationships to facilitate diagnosis of integration issues and their impact on energy performance and indoor environment quality

Accreditation by Singapore Certified Energy Manager

This programme is accredited by the Singapore Certified Energy Manager (SCEM) - Associate level. The registration of SCEM at Associate and Professional levels is managed by the SCEM registry housed under the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES). Candidates who meet the certification criteria may apply for the SCEM Registry, within 5 years from the date of completion of course. What You Will Learn

Post-Diploma Certificate in Building Systems

Subject code Subject LevelCredit Units

This module covers the main building mechanical systems, namely air conditioning systems and pumping systems. Students will learn the fundamentals of air conditioning systems, in both air-side and water-side of the chiller plant, as well as the selection and sizing of chillers and pumps. The use of the Building Management System (BMS) for controls in Air Conditioning and Mechanical Ventilation (ACMV) system, energy saving and optimization strategies will be explored. Students will also learn how to interpret mechanical systems drawings in Building Information Modelling (BIM).


This subject covers the basic knowledge for the design of electrical distribution and installation in facilities. Students will learn the fundamentals of lighting, including the theory of light and the various types of light sources and luminaires. It also covers the methodology to design a lighting system for specific building types to meet the prevailing codes and regulations requirements as well as retrofitting opportunities for existing buildings to reduce lighting energy consumption.

The subject covers 2 main areas: energy management and energy audit. On energy management, the areas covered are issues concerning global warming; need for effective energy management and its alignment with business goals; energy management concept; and the organization and methodology for implementing effective energy management system and plan. Other topics include energy goal setting; overview of the energy market; its regulatory framework; tax and tax incentives; financial and investment issues. On energy audit, the subject discusses energy auditing as a benchmarking tool for evaluating the energy performance of a facility. The importance of energy performance indicators; types of energy audit; energy audit procedures; the acquisition, compilation, processing and analysis of energy use related data; interpretation of results; identification of energy conservation opportunities (ECOs); economic evaluation of identified ECOs and formulation of an energy action plan will be covered as well.


This module introduces the principles of sustainable design with particular focus on integrated system design for high-performance buildings. The students will learn to evaluate the main building systems and their inter-relationships to facilitate diagnosis of integration issues and their impact on energy performance and indoor environment quality. The principles and practice of Integrated Design Process (IDP) and the emerging shift in the industry’s approach due to Building Information Modelling (BIM) will be covered.

Students should bring their own laptop/notebook for the course. We practice a Bring Your Own Device system at the School of Engineering.

Minimum Entry Requirements

 At least a Polytechnic Diploma or ITE Technical Diploma/Technical Engineer Diploma/Work-Learn Technical Diploma in Engineering, or equivalent.

Admission Based on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
