The Specialist Diploma in Hotel Operations & Management aims to equip participants with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Manage increased responsibilities in key areas within the hotel sector including front office, food and beverage, and events/MICE
  • Apply concepts of revenue management in rooms, F&B and events/MICE operations
  • Implement customer service excellence practices and human resources approaches in the hospitality industry
  • Operate in an environment impacted by resource constraints, rapid development in technology and the change in demographic profiles
  • This specialist diploma may qualify for advance standing in universities’ undergraduate degree programmes.


Target Participants
The Specialist Diploma in Hotel Operations & Management is for working adults who are aiming to take on more responsibilities and make progress in their careers within the hotel industry. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to deepen their knowledge and skills in hotel operations and management with a focus on how the hotel industry in Singapore is being shaped by the need to adopt a productivity mind-set, the impact of technology development, the influences of new media and the change in demographic profiles.

SkillsFuture Study Award

The SkillsFuture Study Awards encourage Singaporeans to develop and deepen specialist skills needed by future economic growth sectors or in areas of demand.

Recipients will receive a monetary award of $5,000 which can be used to defray out-of-pocket expenses associated with the course you will be taking. It can also be used on top of existing Government course fee subsidies. Recipients do not need to serve a bond.

What You Will Learn

To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Hotel Operations & Management, participants are required to complete a total of 2 post-diploma certificates (PDCs). Each PDC can be completed in 1 semester, i.e. 6 months. A certificate will be issued once the requirements for each PDC are met.

BCHT002

This subject focuses on the management of the front office. It concentrates on the key areas of the role of the customer, operator and service provider. As part of this focus, it also analyses the value and application of various job functions in the delivery system using property management system software. An appreciation of yield management techniques is also discussed.

BCCC001

This subject takes an in-depth look at the management and operations of food and beverage services and their systems. It covers the implications of day-to-day operations, cost control systems and legislation, profitable menu planning, floor plans, equipment layout and planning, human resources deployment and training, low cost internal marketing ideas, ways to satisfy customers and build sales, meeting customer’s needs and technological innovations. The subject not only covers F&B outlets, but also the room service and catering/banquet areas of the hotel industry.

BCHT004

This subject focuses on essential knowledge, skills and techniques required to provide service excellence and management of customer service. These will apply to frontline, internal support centre and contact centre environment. The module will also highlight the importance of ownership and empowerment in customer service. The module will study how organizational customer service philosophy impacts the entire customer service cycle.

This subject provides focuses on theories, concepts, and strategies applied in the context of meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions (MICE). The subject aims to equip students with the ability to organize, execute and manage a diversity of events and meetings and enhance their roles and contributions to tourism and destination development.  

BCBS005

This subject builds on the importance of human resource management (HRM) in an organization. They will get an in depth study of the various HRM functions, the impact of effective HRM practices on organizational and employee performance and the role of line managers in HRM. Some of the topics are recruitment and selection, performance appraisal, training and development and compensation management. This subject also explores contemporary practices like mentoring and coaching.

BCHT003

This subject provides an overview of revenue management as practised in the hospitality industry. The role and importance of revenue management in the industry and the relationship between revenue management and yielding profitability will be covered. It will introduce the use of historical information and current trends to forecast managing revenue and maximizing profits to achieve goals. This subject will discuss the revenue management of three revenue generating areas in the hotel industry, i.e. rooms, F&B and events/MICE.

Modes of Assessment

The subject delivery will consist of lecture, tutorial and e-learning.  Teaching and learning activities will be held at the School of Business and/or Temasek Tourism Academy.  In line with the government’s call to leverage on the latest technology to enhance learning, online and e-learning will be used as educational resources to make it easier for participants to learn flexibly anywhere, anytime.  

The assessments will be based on a combination of coursework components and examinations.  The coursework components may include individual assignments, group projects and tests.

Minimum Entry Requirements

 At least a Polytechnic diploma with a minimum 3 years of working experience, preferably from a related field.

 Candidates with other equivalent academic qualifications from foreign institutions will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements may be considered for admission to the course based on evidence of at least 5 years of relevant working experience or supporting evidence of competency readiness. Suitable applicants who are shortlisted may have to go through an interview and/or entrance test. The Polytechnic reserves the right to shortlist and admit applicants.
