Diploma in Business Practice (Logistics Management)

Upon completing the course, graduates should be able to:
a. Prepare shipping document, compute shipping costing and declaration of trade permits.
b. Carry out inbound and outbound activities such as order processing, order picking, cross docking operations, break-bulk activities, materials handling and other relevant activities of warehousing.
c. Apply fundamental purchasing principles in controlling inventory level and production planning.
d. Demonstrate the use of information and automation systems to improve productivity in supply chain.
e. Carry out basic specialised logistics tasks in cold chain and chemical logistics.



Target Participants

The logistics industry presents continued opportunities for individuals who are keen to develop knowledge and skills in logistics functions that serve the changing demands of the industry.

Graduates of the programme will gain the skills of logistics operations and knowledge of supply chain management in order to execute logistics-related tasks effectively and efficiently. This will allow them to progress along the different career pathways shown in the Skill Framework for Logistics.

This subject provides an overview of the fundamental practices in materials management and its impact on the supply chain of an organisation. The materials management function broadly covers both procurement as well as inventory control and proper management of these functions is required to ensure optimum inflow of materials into the organisation.

The subject will include strategies in procurement and supply management. It also covers various material management techniques.

BCLO002

This subject concerns the design and operations of systems to provide goods and services. The subject aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to plan, schedule and control activities that transform inputs into outputs. A set of well-developed operations management concepts such as aggregate planning, production strategies, service delivery, operations scheduling, project management, facilities layout and quality improvement tools will be covered. The subject will focus on the application of operations management concepts used in service and manufacturing industries.

BCLO005

This subject covers various techniques and tools such as process chart, flow diagram as well as time study to map and evaluate business operation process.

The subject will use simulation software to create computer models of the various logistics and supply chain operation processes such as Order Fulfilment, Production, Storage and Inventory Management. Through the conduct of these simulation studies, an optimal deployment of resources to improve the overall operational efficiency and effectiveness will be determined.

The subject provides an overview of the various aspects of transport operations and freight management and its importance in the global trade and supply chain management. The subject covers the important freight concepts including the Incoterms, Harmonised System (HS) Codes, customs duties and GST. Various shipping document requirements, preparation of shipment costing and declaration ot & Materials Managementf trade permits will also be emphasised.

The subject will also provide insights into the practices of effective management of transport for freight movement through the use of vast network of transportation modes.

This subject provides an overview in freight management and focuses on the significance of freight transport in the global setting. Topics related to freight tariff systems, costing, operational flows, key performance indicators, customs documentation and clearance procedures will be covered to give a good understanding of the practices in the international freight industry.

BCLO008

This subject provides an overview of the logistical activities performed by the chemical industry and cold chain industry. It covers basic knowledge of the international and Singapore regulations that governs the logistical aspects of storing and handling hazardous chemical products and chilled/frozen products.

Topics related to health and safety factors that are associated with the storage, handling and transport of hazardous chemical products and chilled/frozen products will be covered to give a good understanding of the practices in these specialised industry.

The subject provides an overview of the relations between supply chain management and logistics management, and their impact on the success of organisations. It focuses on the major functional components in a supply chain and explains how they interact with one another in contributing to the success of a business organisation. The application of technology will also be emphasised, as technology is a key driver of business operations in the supply chain.

This subject will help students develop effective oral professional communication skills that are essential in their working lives. They will learn how to plan, prepare and deliver oral presentations that are professional and audience-centered. In addition, students will learn the skills of conducting themselves professionally in a meeting.

This subject intends to equip working adults to be competent in using office automating tools. Emphasis is placed on creating hands-on training environment which enables participants to embrace business information technologies to function and contribute effectively in an increasingly technologically driven workplace. This subject provides an understanding of basic accounting concepts and processes, and their applications in businesses. It includes the double-entry system of bookkeeping, preparation of financial statements, accounting for assets such as cash and inventories and the importance of controls over these assets, as well as analysis of financial statements using ratios.

BCLO001

The subject provides students with an introductory survey of the applications of descriptive and inferential statistics in a business environment. It aims to equip students with the knowledge and skills to: organise, analyse, interpret and present data related to a business environment, and apply basic statistical concepts to solve simple business-related problems. Students will be taught the various numerical measures such as describing data, basic concepts of probability, probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing and linear regression and correlation analysis. Students will make use of scientific calculators and Microsoft Excel to solve statistical problems and the focus will be on interpretation of the statistical measures computed.

BCPD002

The subject equips participants with tools used in solving business problems and for decision making. Participants are taught how to identify the root causes of problems, select the problems to tackle, generate workable solutions and decide on the courses of action. Teaching contents include contemporary problem solving tools and critical/creative thinking skills that are fundamental to decision making. Participants walk away from this subject with a box of tools to solve problems and make decisions with confidence in a dynamic world of business.
