Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care

 

The aim of the Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care programme is to promote knowledge and skills in veterinary nursing, wellness and rehabilitation for application in the veterinary, pet care, biomedical research, wildlife rehabilitation and relevant industries. 

Upon graduating from the course, graduates should be able to:

  • apply basic scientific knowledge in nutrition and diet planning for animal wellness and rehabilitation
  • apply common veterinary wellness or massage techniques for animal health maintenance
  • apply knowledge in care for animals of different breeds and stages of growth and development as well as those that suffer from injury and ill health
  • apply knowledge in animal behavior enrichment and socialization
  • assist veterinarians in therapeutic treatment such as herbal therapy and acupuncture or other forms of complementary  veterinary care and support
  • apply knowledge and skill sets in veterinary dental nursing, post-surgery care and first adi and emergency rescue care
  • apply knowledge of animal welfare and develop an animal wellness plan


Target Participants
  • Fresh graduates with relevant diploma or equivalent in veterinary technology, veterinary bioscience, biomedical science and technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, nursing or occupational therapy.
  • Diploma or equivalent in veterinary technology, veterinary bioscience, biomedical science and technology, biotechnology, pharmaceutical, nursing or occupational therapy with more than 1 year of experience.

What You Will Learn

To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Veterinary Wellness Care, participants are required to complete a total of 2 Post-Diploma Certificates (PDCs). A certificate will be issued upon successful completion of each PDC.

Post-Diploma Certificate in Veterinary Care & Health

It covers normal and abnormal behaviours and different enrichment modes for improving behaviour of animals from the wild and those under human care in confinement as in pet shops, wildlife parks, and laboratory animal facilities.  Signals through pheromones, auditory, visual and tactile means used in animal communication that impact on behaviour would be covered.

AVW0102

It covers different forms of nursing care such as breed specific care and health; care for the different animal life stages such as the young and senior care for companion animals, wildlife and avian animals; aquatic care for species such as reptilian, terrapins and fish; wound management, body condition scoring, pain assessment, post-surgery and recovery care; pre- and postpartum care and management of post-surgery complications. Animal health and common diseases including zoonotic transmission as well as relevant aspects of One Health will be covered.

AVW0103

It covers responsible handling and first aid care for wild and domestic animals, equine, laboratory and aquatic animals. Procedures on appropriate sheltering, evacuation and transportation, care and feeding and use of suitable equipment or devices for performing rescue and disaster preparedness as well as euthanasia, carcass documentation and disposal would be covered.

It covers basics of traditional Chinese veterinary medicine including concepts of Qi, the Yin Yang and the Five element viewpoints as well as applications in animal therapy and wellness. A holistic overview on the relations between the animal body and diseases or disorders from the viewpoints of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine and western veterinary medicine will be covered.

AVW0202

It covers different types of exercise for rehabilitation and general health maintenance for small and large animals. Exercises will include muscle toning, agility enhancement, mental and physical co-ordination as well as hydrotherapy, different wellness and rehabilitation techniques, dental hygiene, grooming and socialisation. Wellness health screening and diagnosis as well as wellness programme planning for the young, adult and senior pet animal will be covered.

AVW0203

It covers consideration factors for planning a diet subject to animal breed, age and health condition. Herbal nutrition will also be covered.

Modes of Assessment

The assessment would be based on 100% coursework with written & practical tests, case studies, assignments, presentations and projects. 

Minimum Entry Requirements

  • The minimum entry requirement is at least a Polytechnic diploma or equivalent in veterinary technology and science, veterinary bioscience, biomedical science and technology, nursing or occupational therapy.
  • Applicants with other equivalent academic qualifications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
