Smart Manufacturing with Product Identification System

With the advancements of digital technologies driving towards Advanced Manufacturing System, the need for batch size one or mass customization production at the cost of mass production is increasing. As a result, a high degree of production flexibility and adaptability is required.

This is achievable with the use of object identification system particularly the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID), an integral part of a smart factory that enables decentralized control of the production processes.

This course will introduce the use of object identification systems, particularly the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). This technology is an integral part of a smart factory the enables decentralized control of the production processes Objective To learn the fundamentals of RFID technology & its benefits and applying it in manufacturing to enhance the flexibility in production configuration.

Course Objective

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  1. Describe the benefits of using object identification systems in manufacturing
  2. Describe how object identification and tracking is crucial in enabling smart factories and decentralized control of production processes
  3. Apply object identification technology in a manufacturing environment

Course Outline

To learn the fundamentals of RFID technology and its benefits and applying it in manufacturing to enhance the flexibility in production configuration.

  • Fundamentals of object identification system
  • Selection of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system
  • Getting familiar with reading and writing of RFID tag and the data format
  • Identify the benefits of using RFID in production
  • Applying RFID in manufacturing processes

Participants will experience practical hands-on sessions with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC) and RFID tag reading and writing.

Trainers' Profile

Peng Wai Meng

Wai Meng is a Lecturer with the Diploma in Mechatronics at Temasek Polytechnic. He has been teaching various subjects in programmable logic controllers, factory automation and robotics. He also trains students to compete in Worldskills competitions under the Mechatronics trade. Prior to joining Temasek Polytechnic, he worked in global MNCs to design automated equipment and implement advanced manufacturing technologies to enhance manufacturing productivity.

Derrick Boey

Derrick is a Senior Lecturer with the Diploma in Mechatronics at Temasek Polytechnic. His work experience includes equipment design, automation and high-volume manufacturing. Currently, he conducts classes for full-time students and adult learners in robotics, automation and microcontrollers. Apart from this, he also trained students for WorldSkills competitions under the Mechatronics trade. Note: there are 2 facilitators for this course
