This course aims to deepen and equip participants with relevant skills to meet the industry demand for trained specialists in Biomedical Engineering, Medical Technology and Healthcare Services in the Biomedical industry.

Upon completing the course, the graduates will be equipped to undertake the following biomedical engineering and services functions:

  • perform maintenance of biomedical equipment and devices
  • perform troubleshooting of biomedical equipment and devices
  • develop solutions for engineering problems related to biomedical engineering
  • practice Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) procedures in the manufacturing value stream of medical devices or combination products
  • formulate good healthcare operations management, healthcare administration and regulatory compliance within healthcare, medtech and biomedical industry
  • administer clinical trials.

Target Participants

Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents who are fresh Polytechnic graduates from relevant full-time courses of study.

Course Structure

To be awarded the Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Engineering and Services, ELP students are required to complete a total of 15 Credit Units or 3 Skills-Based Modular Courses (SBMCs) curated from SUSS’s Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Engineering, as well as a project and 2 SBMCs from TP’s PDC in Medical Equipment.  ELP students must complete the course within 18 months.

Upon successful completion of each SBMC at SUSS, participants will be awarded the Course Certificate by SUSS. 

Upon successful completion of the 2 TP’s SBMCs and Project, participants will be awarded the Post-Diploma Certificate in Medical Equipment.

The Specialist Diploma in Biomedical Engineering & Services will be awarded jointly by TP and SUSS to participants who have successfully completed the SBMCs at SUSS and the PDC at TP.

The module aims to provide students with a general understanding of a healthcare regulation as it exists in Singapore with relevant emphasis on regulation that pertains to biomedical engineering. There will also be a brief overview of relevant foreign examples such as FDA, CE etc. Students will also be given an introduction to international health standards and accreditation systems


This module aims to provide students with a general understanding of the Singapore Healthcare system and how hospital is run locally and how the BME department functions within the context of a hospitals operations.


In this module, students will be introduced to the basic principles behind the design of clinical research trials to effectively test medical hypotheses. The critical components of a well designed clinical research protocol will be explored.  Students will be exposed to the different types of clinical trials used in the industrial, government and academic sectors for pharmaceutical, medical device, or biologic interventions.

The aim of this module is to teach students the principles, applications and design of the medical instruments commonly used in the health care industry.  Students will understand the design of an instrumentation system for diagnostic and therapeutic medical applications.


The module aims to provide students with a general understanding of a wide range of biomedical devices such as cardiac devices, ophthalmological devices, auditory devices, and diagnostic tools.  Students will also learn about the medical informatics with application to the healthcare environment.  With a thorough understanding of the relevant principles, students should be able to manage and transform healthcare data into useful information and knowledge to improve patient care, as well as to design systems that use this information to support clinical decision-making.


This subject seeks to provide students with the knowledge and skills to integrate and apply relevant knowledge to a work-based problem or scenario while demonstrating appropriate project development skills, professional ethics and attitudes.  The deliverable may be a solution to a problem, process/product improvements, or the development, design, evaluation or implementation of ideas.
