Overview

Introduction

Singapore continues to be a leading destination for events and conferences; and is ranked annually by the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) and Union of International Associations (ICA) to be among the top cities in the world for association conventions and meetings. The Singapore Tourism Board has also identified that there is an opportunity to leverage on Singapore’s position as an educational hub through the development of executive education and corporate training events.

The SkillsFuture Earn & Learn Programme (ELP) for the Tourism and Events sector is a 12-month work-study leading to the Specialist Diploma in MICE & Events Management that aims to deepen participants’ knowledge and skills, while in their first year of entering the industry.  

Upon completing the course, graduates should be able to: 

a) Apply strategies, skills and services related to the hosting of MICE-related events in the  hospitality sector.

b) Apply an operations framework for fairs, exhibitions and events.

c) Develop compelling content and differentiated experiences for the MICE and events sector.

d) Attract and manage a portfolio of sponsors to achieve event outcomes.

e) Manage projects using a project management framework.

f) Apply concepts of revenue management in MICE/events, tourism and travel operations.

g) Use of digital media as a marketing platform in consumer engagement and to achieve marketing objectives.

Target Participants

Singaporeans or Singapore Permanent Residents who are fresh Polytechnic graduates from relevant full-time courses of study.

Career Opportunities

At the entry level, the job position is a Events Executive / Events Co-ordinator1. Upon completing the course under the Earn and Learn Programme, graduates can look forward to taking up some of the possible types of positions1:

  • Senior Events Executive
  • Senior Events Co-ordinator
  • Senior Project Executive
  • Assistant Manager

ELP graduates may also look forward to wage increment and role expansion in their workplace, subject to their work performance.

Course Details

Course Commencement 

The ELP Programme is scheduled to commence in every April and/or October.

Course Duration

ELP participants will undergo a 12-month structured training programme, including facilitated learning, e-learning, and on-job-training (OJT).

BCLE002

This subject explores a variety of operational issues which are prerequisite for accommodating and supporting MICE events. The issues include the application of strategies, skills and services related to the hosting of MICE events in hotels.

BCLE003

Event Curation comprises topics related to selecting, organising and presenting content at an event. Events offer numerous platforms to tell the event story; from programme scheduling to the choice of speakers and performers, production elements such as music, lighting, décor and choice of catering. The creation of the event experience is the art of telling the story. 

Event Sponsorship introduces the topic of events sponsorship and marketing theory, as well as practices. It addresses various disciplines, including sponsorship and marketing policy, strategy formulation, planning and attracting a portfolio of sponsors, and collaborative sponsorship-cum-marketing efforts leading to successful event management outcomes.

BCLE004

This subject covers the management of logistics relating to the operation of fairs, exhibitions and events. This includes layout planning, freight management and vendor management. The subject also integrates management implications such as risk management, legal documentation, customer experience and general event support.

BCLE005

This subject provides an overview of revenue management as practised in the tourism industry. The role and importance of revenue management in the industry and the relationship between revenue management and yielding profitability will be covered. It will introduce the use of historical information and current trends to forecast managing revenue and maximizing profits to achieve goals.

BCLE006

This subject focuses on providing insights into the use of digital media as a marketing platform in consumer engagement and to achieve marketing objectives. Apart from social media marketing, participants will be introduced to technology available in Customer Relationship Management (CRM), as well as digital tools used in tourism to create exceptional customer experiences. 

BCLE007

This subject focuses on implementing the project management framework including aspects of planning activities of a project, designing the work breakdown structure, allocating project resources, implementing and controlling the progress of the project until completion. Participants will learn the use of project management software in this module.

Modes of Assessment

The assessment would be based on 100% coursework with role play, written tests, case studies, assignments and projects.
