Engineering Economy

The subject covers a basic understanding of the economic aspects of operational applications, elements of costs and costing methods, and relation between cost behavior and profit. The subject also focuses on the applications of the process on economic analysis of different investment alternatives.


The aims of this subject are to provide students with the knowledge and:

  1. Skills to perform feasibility studies of engineering proposals.
  2. Basic analytical skill to analyze investment alternatives.
  3. Fundamental skill to measure business performance.

Course Outline

  1. Interpret Full Absorbed (Standard) Costing.
  2. Apply Break-even Analysis to the impact of changing costs.
  3. Interpret Life-Cycle cost, the concept of the time value of money and the earning & purchasing power of money.
  4. Demonstrate the use of Interest Formula for Economic Equivalence.
  5. Demonstrate the application of process for economic decision-making for different investment alternatives.

Modes of Assessment

Continual Assessment 100 %


Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Engineering (Operations & Systems Management).

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.
