Inventory Management

The subject will impart an operational knowledge and understanding of inventory management principles and techniques, roles and responsibilities, and the impact that inventory can have on a business. This subject covers topics such as inventory management fundamentals, ordering fulfillment and production planning. 


The aims of this subject are to provide students with:

  1. Methods to evaluate the value of stocks in an organisation.
  2. Tools to determine optimum order quantities under differing demand and lead time condition.
  3. Methods for forecasting demand in inventory management.

Course Outline

  1. Describe the general features of stocks, their purpose and importance.
  2. Analyse the Economic Order Quantity (EOQ) that minimises costs.
  3. Analyse the best order size when model variables are known with certainty.
  4. Analyse the best order size when model variables are not known with certainty.
  5. Distinguish the different approaches to forecasting.
  6. Apply material requirements planning (MRP) to schedule orders and operations.

Modes of Assessment

Continual Assessment 100%


Upon successful completion of the modular unit, students will be awarded a Statement of Result which can count towards the attainment of the Diploma in Engineering (Operations & Systems Management).

Minimum Entry Requirements

Applicants applying for modular units which are drawn from existing full diploma or post-diploma programmes will have the same minimum entry requirements as the full qualifications.
