Today, many people feel anxious about how they look. We see perfect faces and bodies everywhere, and slowly we start to believe that looking good is the only way to be liked or accepted. Because of this, many forget how to see themselves with kindness.
To Be Seen explores appearance anxiety and its effects on how people feel about their own bodies and faces. Lumi was created as a gentle companion to help people learn to choose themselves again. Instead of focusing on changing how you look, Lumi focuses on how you see yourself.
Through simple daily check-ins, affirmations, and reflection activities, Lumi encourages users to notice the parts of themselves they like, even on difficult days. The app grows with the user, reminding them that their worth is not decided by mirrors, likes, or other people.
Lumi is a safe space. It helps people feel seen, not for looking perfect, but for being real.

Hi, I am Yuxin, a design student who believes design should feel human before it feels impressive. I’m interested in emotions, identity, and how visual storytelling can create safe spaces for conversations people are usually afraid to have. Through this project on appearance anxiety, inspired by my own experiences and the people around me, I focused on empathy, simplicity, and honesty. Instead of trying to “fix” insecurities, I designed Lumi to gently shift perspectives and encourage kinder self-talk. For me, good design is not about perfection. It’s about reflection, understanding, and connection.
