As much as we like to believe animal welfare laws protect laboratory animals, they don’t, at least not consistently. Not As Nature Intended is a speculative exhibition that exposes the gap between what animal testing laws promise and how they are actually enforced within laboratories.
The project aims to make this gap visible through laboratory animals reimagined with speculative biological adaptations and exaggerated mutations that illustrate what these animals would need to become to endure the “minimal” suffering permitted when laws and regulations meant to protect them are neglected.
By showing what these animals would need to become in order to survive us, The Creature Collection asks a simple question: Why should they have to in the first place?
